    OK guy and girls;

Have seen so many bright postings elsewhere on this forum but could find none dealing directly with Palladium and TCPA.

A subject which should be of such profound concern boycotts ought be considered.

For those of you who need a Heads Up point Google at Palladium and/or TCPA then come back here and give an opinion.

For one thing, can anyone give us stat's on Intel's inclusion of the Fritz Chip on its processors (not `if' but which ones) and whether the other chip makers are doing the same?

This is just the kickoff' in belief the personal computerist (note how I avoid / lump Nerd, Hacker, and Geek under a classy umbrella!-) has a vested interest in keeping as much distance as possible from these onerous developments.

    Thanks, HBH

    That will kill Linux !!!
Why ? Because no program can be installed on a computer that use TCPA-Palladium without Microsoft agreement (showing that this program is not a virus or a hacked one). So each time you will need an update, a RPM or an other freeware, you will have to wait that Microsoft agree with it (I guess it will be long : a few days...).
What a big shit... (sorry), we will have to buy some "normal" PC before that dark age.

I think it will help linux grow. People will become so disgusted with Microsoft that people won't buy Windows anymore. I am sure that the Linux distros can work together to make a new protocol. I recon that this is a bad business move for microsoft and will most likely be the cause of it's demise!

If this happens I will gladly switch to Mac OS(It's not going on there too, is it?). Maybe something new will emerge if linux does die. People will definately not tolerate this kind of tyranny. I love computers, but I wont let microsoft have control of my life.

I'll never accept TCP Palladium into my home!

This is what I'm hoping, that people will rebel with their purchasing decisions and buy non-MS Operating Systems and Programs, and hopefully AMD and the other chip makers will refuse to install Fritz chips and push Intel to do the same or go the way of MicroSoft.

Frankly, I've been computing since the 1970's and have always viewed MS Windows as a negative development.

I don't like Microsoft's policy but I disagree when you say that it was a bad development. Of course IE integrated to Windows and all the things made to be the leader on the software market are both hatefull. However Windows has allow each house to use a PC. Without that OS, we would not have so much PC... Unix and Linux were made by/for computer addicted that already know what are "ls", "more", "man", "cp" and so on. Now Linux is becoming more easy to use for a family (but not enough, so I don't installed it on my parents'computer). There is still a lot to do.

About TCPA/Palladium, I looked my friends presentation about it. So ? Argh.... "Please, Help" (5th element).
TCPA use a chip to add crypto (functions, keys...) to the computer. It has its own memory so it's good for security. At first it should be put as a single chip on the motherboard, then it will be integrated in the main processor (thanks to Intel...). TCPA alone is great (maybe that there are some hidden trap but it seems to be fine).
Palladium is the new game from "Bilou's friends". This OS would be an evolution of Windows that would use TCPA in aim to increase the security. Sounds like propaganda, no ? In fact, it will use a separate memory for the secured applications and the other ones. Thus it should be impossible to do a buffer overflow on the OS or any critical software (antivirus...), for exemple.
So what are the problems ? In theory, the TCPA/Palladium group could sign every software after they checked that they are safe, but in reallity they would not : it would cost a lot of money. Even if they would do it, the GPL licence allow each user to modify a software... so he would have to submit it to the TCPA/Palladium group ! The result would be that "GPL" would become "Open source". Something else : the keys stocked in the TCPA's chip are only readable by the secured part of the OS that could transmit it to Microsoft or Intel (Big Brother is watching you)!
There are so much things to say about it ! My conclusion would be : use a smart card for your crypto ! It's safe and you can change it whenever you want.

You're a good thinker SG but you have to study MS Windows Code from early on to see it has inherent flaws. It will always be unstable in multi-tasking until and unless they start over from scratch.

For now, I recommend as a minimum having two Separate computers, one for personal and maximum applications and work, the other to connect to the InterNet. I stress the separate to insure no access to sniffers, etc. that MS has been using for years and which will multiply logarithmically with TCPA and Palladium.

The real problem is as always Murphy's law with a spin. Murphy's law, as you probably know, says What Can Go Wrong WILL MS Murphy's law says, What Can be done Wrong Will be Done!
