As much as I wish I could vote for OpenOffice, it just doesn't work well enough. Its spread-sheet application just doesn't cut it. On the other side...earlier versions of Windows Excel were great, and maybe even the compat of newer versions. Still, VB's for suckas.

I've used both and for the money you can't beat Open Office. Also, updates are much easier to deal with and they are always free. MS Office may have a few more bells and whistles than Open Office, but I've never needed to use any of them. If you already know MS Office, the learning curve of going to Open Office is very small, but the reverse is not true. MS Office has a horrendous learning curve.

I like the open concept and wish to support it at least by using the products, I also recommend it when the opportunity comes up.

There also LibreOffice, made by an offshoot of the OpenOffice people. It's similar to OO, but some people have claimed that it performs better and has more compatibility than OO with MS products. It's the default install for some Linux distros.

It forked a little more than a year ago, coincidentally I came across this article today http://www.unixmen.com/software/189...rossroads-differ-by-77-million-new-code-lines. It cites a difference of 7.7 million lines of code, that's a bigger divergence than I would have assumed.

I voted MS Office. OO is fine for personal use, but soon becomes a royal PITA if you have to support users of it.

I was once directed by a head of department to replace various Microsoft OS's and Apps with freeware, which meant Linux and Open Office. His P.A. was crying and threatening to quit within days.
