Online Marketers Face EU VAT Tax July 1

Online marketers in the United States are preparing to collect value-added taxes on software, music and other online purchases delivered digitally to European residents July 1 under a directive unanimously passed by the European Union

Companies will have to levy charges of 15 percent to 25 percent, depending on the country, on select Internet transactions such as software and music downloads, monthly subscriptions to an Internet service provider or on any product purchased through an online auction in the 15-member EU.

DAMN THEM!!! DAMN THEM TO HECK!!!!!

While I normally find that the moderators here are, if anything, not taking enough in the way of moderative action - this thread shouldn't have been moved from the Politics section. It is regarding a decision made by the EU that will affect the rest of the world, and since the US is going to make a stink about it (it's just a matter of time really), it ought to be in the politics section.

I dont think this is nerd culture??
This doesnt just effect online music stuff this is an EU policy that will hit everyones pockets with a 15-25% tax for everything to EBAY purchases, ISP subscription charges, Web page hosting etc charges the lot.
How did this go in without anyone knowing or hearing about it until it had been passed unanimously??

I'll ask the Mods to put this back into politics forum where i think i will get more meaningful discussion.
I mean to hope that theres someway to protest this i dont think they will remove a tax that will net them what im guessing will be a small fortune.
But what reasoning are they putting for this? and so quietly?

Why are you guys upset about paying sales tax? Someone has to fund all the Algerian immigrants... In fact, you should thank the United States for complying with European Union law without protesting it. This could be a good source of revenue for the E.U., not that I think a lot of people order from the States though.

    *sigh*
Jerrek, there's a difference between being upset at having to pay tax (which isn't a major problem in Europe, we grumble but generally understand the whole "public funding" idea), and being annoyed at new taxation that we were not consulted on.

Mind you, the only thing that's been said in this thread so far is that we're thinking that this thread is in the wrong forum...

Well, that's Europe for you. When in doubt tax anything and anything heavily and unrelentingly. Socialist bastards.

Yeah, we had our own beef with an impersonal totalitarian government that would tax us without representation, so we had ourselves a revolution to get away from that kind of bullshit. Heh, kind of ironic that as our technology makes the world smaller, here we are again running back into the same old problem.

My understanding was that this tax seems to be going into the pockets of the US companies we are buying from though shafting me nicely as with the weak dollar as messed up as that is, is one reason i'm grabbing a fair few bits and peices cheaply from over there at the moment.

Also that fact that those already include Tax why another tax on the price+tax for the purchase with then adds onto the shipping and import tax...wtf IS this tax about exactly?
As far as i can see i get taxed 3 times for 1 purchase now.
Once on the price of the product in the US.
Once again if i buy it online
and once again if customs poke their nose in which they are doing to almost all orders now since 9/11.

When i bought C&C generals from the US to get it a bit early the shipping tax almost cost me as much as the game forget about actualy shipping.
I think i was somthing like game £30
    shipping £20
    Customs tax £20
Realising you've just been shafted into paying more in tax than the cost of the product - priceless.

Well, you're supposed to pay your 25% VAT by law. Why would you want to avoid that? Just look at all the social benefits you're getting. That costs money, and taxes are needed.

As for the tax going to the company, I don't think so.

    What? What already includes tax?

Now why would you want to pay 70 pounds for a game? I mean, you know you're going to get nailed at customs, but yet you buy from the States? It isn't really cheaper from the sounds of it.

Thats the point i've never been nailed by customes before and they've started poking their nose into almost everythign i buy now and taxing me for things i didn't even know they had a tax for.
I don't buy much from the states now unless i have to.
I'm well into airsoft and very often i'm forced to import parts for my rifle or whatever from the States or Asia but now i'm getting hit by a lot of tax for it and its hurting.
If they want to add another tax on when i purchase it on top of all that i just don't think i'll bother anymore as like i say it ends up costing me almost as much in tax as the product which seems a bit silly imo.
