Eww, Unix. I have a theory that there is a good reason for the direct corilation between the hey day of Unix, and the general populous having a complete lack of interest in computing.

I hate Unix. It seems to me that most Unix machines are $500k FTP sending, flat file reading pieces of crap. You migth as well buy a PC with window 95 on it and learn how to write BAT files. It would save you the $499800 and the fortune in power consumption. Plus you could find someone to administer it for less that $80/hour. UNIX = COST.

    Just IHMO of course.

Flat files are easier to manipulate and diskspace is cheap. Using all binary files is like deciding that all writing should be in [INSERT ARCHAIC LANGUAGE HERE] because the characters are smaller and few. Well thats all fine and dandy, but its hard to read/write/translate. Paper is cheap, so we write books, in english, and make good use of whitespace.

Same goes for flatfiles. Sure they take up more space on a harddisk, but they're REALLY easy to read by the computer and even easier to read for a human.

As for unix being expensive, I agree, the unix mainframes were awfully expensive, thats why people (like Linux Torvalds and Berkley Systems) decided to port it to the X86 architecture. Thus we have Linux and BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc). All of which are very powerful and cheap.
