    Hello Everyone!
    I was wondering if you guys had any opinions on what the best notebook, performance not price wise, would be at the moment?

    I heard that the IBM ThinkPad T40, and the Toshiba S1 were pretty good.

    right now, this is a difficult question to answer. with Intel's switch to the Pentium-M, clock speeds don't mean much when it comes to outright performance. a 1.6Ghz Pentium-M is about as fast as a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4

    The IBM T40 has one of the best battery-life rating out of any laptop on the market today. 8 hours, IIRC. that's a selling point for me!

    Apple's powerbook offerings are among the best for desktop replacements, but a 1Ghz AlBook will not be able to output rendered 3-D frames as fast as a 1.6gzh Pentium-M, but it will be pretty much as fast for every day use. And the latencies for recording music will be better, and Final Cut Pro is far and away one of the best video editors out there.

    What do you want to do with the machine? performance depends heavily on the goal. final output, FPS, context switching speed? what area of performance is most important to you?

    Sony Vaio are nice...

    But if u want top of the line performance with no question of price... the obvious answer is alienware.... they are gonna spit out a top of the line no holds barred better product than anyone, and it might look cool to boot

    No doubt about the alienware laptops. They look fantastic. I did see a toshiba that I haven't found benchmarks on yet, but it had some amazing features.

    2.8 P4 Hyperthreaded
    512 DDR Memory
    80GB 5400RPM HD
    17" (!!!) widescreen monitor
    Halfway descent built in speakers
    A remote control and TV tuner
    GeforceFX 5200GO 64MB Video

    This is teh media Center edition of the laptiop, thus the remote and TV tuner. There is a regular one too that is very similar. I am telling you though this thing is huge. But screw it, all I really want is a desktop I can carry that has a built in UPS anyway

    If it makes it for 2 hours without a plug it is doing better than I am.

    Are you looking for a gaming laptop (like alienware) or are you just planning to run MS office apps and Internet browsers on it? When you say performance do you mean raw computing power or longer battery life or capabilities?
