I have installed it over 1 week ago and have had no problems. I have Win XP Professional. I have a 64 bit processor as well. I really don't see anything that has changed at all. It did however seem to make some of my games a little bit better, but not a whole lot. Perhaps the newer games and newer software that is coming out will need it but the old stuff sure doesn't. Here is the site to download it at.

Since people are a bit quick at clicking links in regards to DX10, the rest of this thread explains this is NOT DX10

Umm Why would Microsoft release this for XP when it means people who want it need to upgrade to vista. Are you sure this is right?

Hey cos...just for shits and grins...would you press the start button, then "run" and then type "dxdiag"...look at the bottom, and it will say what version your running.

I'm just curious.

Thanks, man

You are right. What then did I download when I went to the Direct X 10 site that I linked to? Was n't that supposed to be the 10 I downloaded? I guess it wasn't, sorry again. I don't understand why they say its Direct X 10 but it wasn't.

What is in DirectX 10 that is so special compared to 9?

It was just a rewrite of DX9. Some new features, mostly the interaction between DX and the OS was changed. XP would need to be rewritten to use DX10, and there's no chance Microsoft will do that. Maybe someone else will, but it'd be a huge job.

Sad to think I'll eventually have to get a copy of Vista...

It's not really, in fact I read a game review somewhere about Crysis where they found out that by editing this one file, they could lift the artificially imposed graphical limits that only shut off if you have DX10. Yep, artificially limited. When they lifted it, apparently it looked uncanny to DX10 when they were in fact using 9. It's just a marketing ploy, but rest assured, aanything after 10 will probably only be for vista, unfortunately.

This is just unforgivable MS Marketing bullshit. I'm done with MS, going unix based from now on.

You're kidding me right? What person would think it was out for XP and not verify what they were downloading! Oh well... Vista bites wait for the new service pack!

generally it's just part of a software lifecycle, the OS is given a duration of time which it's supported, updated and added to. When it reaches a certain point in the lifecycle, when another version is out to take it over, slowly the support is withdrawn.

XP probably would of been further along this cycle hadn't it been down to some teething problems that caused companies like DELL and HP to ship with XP rather than Vista (This increased the length of time the OS is supported).

Eventually XP will go the same way as Win95/98/ME

Btw, on a moderation note I changed the title of this thread and put a MOD note in red on the initial post. The reason for this is although the information might have been borked, this thread could still lead to discussion on why DX versions exist and what ways their might be around them for other operating systems etc.

Vista is bad, try PCLinuxOS

Well, you might be able to get some of the DX10 effects to run on DX9, but some features just can't work without the rewritten (bloated, crappy, infested, overbearing) OS that is Vista. I think games will support DX9 for a long time to come though, there hasn't been a single game exclusive to DX10 yet and maybe 6 or 7 released so far that support it at all.
Oh well... Vista bites wait for the new service pack!
Sadly the issues I have with Vista aren't going to be fixed in any service pack :(
