Heya, I'm new around here, just been here for about a week. I've had a lot to say so far, so I figured I'd better introduce myself. I was directed here by a friend and am glad to see so many who actually think about life. I've really enjoyed my time here so far, and look forward to the time I'll spend here in the future. The discussion here is great. Acceptance of a gift, honors the givers.
Welcome. Yea, it is nice here. Intelligent Community, at last. A word of advice: Stay away from the religion forum!
Hello there, welcome. Enjoy yourself. Religion forum is an endless circle, no one wants to change his opinions. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Hehe... thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I've already been trapped there. Give my opinion in a couple of places, and I've spent days backing myself. I prefer the Philosophy section, but not too much interest in that section, and what topics are there that people talk in don't really interest me much. I've always been interested in the sciences, but didn't have much opportunity growing up to pursue that interest. I've spent most of my education in the arts (hence my interest in philosophy). So, despite my interest in the sciences, I am not very knowledgeable, so I can't really interact very much in alot of such discussions here. *sigh* Oh well, I can still observe, and learn.
The best way to learn is to try and understand. None of us known about all the topics discussed here. It wouldn't be very interesting if we did.
Why's that? Yes, we are intelligent. I love it here. It's more intelligent than my everyday life. I need to get someone here too.
You know that's actually quite interesting. I've always wondered that since the apple absorbs every color but red, wouldn't it actually be the opposite of red?
It absorbs all the other colors and those colors disappear. The only color left is red, which bounces back into your eye. I think you were being sarcastic anyway... but look what happens when you don't know everything?
Sarcastic? No. I understand that the color red is reflected back to the eye. But that's my point. The light coming from the apple is red. But the apple itself must be all the other colors. It's all just a matter of perspective, really. Anyway, color isn't exactly what it seems to be, right?
I love green apples. They're sour. Oh, see Persol, this discussion is interesting. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
The reason red is reflected back, and not absorbed as the rest of the colors are, is that the apple already contains red. So, really, it is red.
Hmm. I never thought of it that way before. Nice. But, I wonder if it's an accurate way of describing the process?
I don't think it's accurate to say the apple already contains red. It's more like a chemical property of all the molecules in the skin of the apple.
well... what is color, per se, except electrical impulses interpreted by the brain? So to ask, what color is this or that, or anything, is simply to ask, what is being absorbed into my pupils so that it is interpreted by my brain in a certain way. Nothing is "red" per se, since colors, as such, are merely ideas. The chemical properties of anything are what determine what part of light is reflected from it, based upon what is already contained within any given object. Therefore, to say that "the apple is red" is merely to say (though it is not consciously thought of this way) that the apple contains those chemical properties necessary to reflect what our mind interprets as correlating with the word and image of red, while absorbing every other color particle of light.
Color is determined by wavelength. I'm sure everyone here knows of the light spectrum. Between infrared and ultraviolet (I think) is the visible spectrum. Red has the longest, and violet the shortest visible wavelength. That's why red is on the outside of the rainbow and violet on the inside.
