Finnally its reached the point where we can dismantle every nuke we own (most probably selling it to poorer countries [ironically]). The Millitary is buiding laser firing Planes to shoot down balistic missiles. We just need a ton of those and then we can go to war without threat of human extinction! Yay! what are YOUR thoughts, millitant peices of crap?
Some thoughts: Nukes will not go away in the foreseeable future for fear that someone will keep theirs. The lasers, missile shield etc. are in the testing phase; won’t be perfected for years and perhaps never fully trusted to work in a pinch. The enemy will work around any defense you can think of. I see the missile shield as an offensive weapon. If you can shield yourself 100% then you can hit your enemy with impunity. So the shield is nearly as bad as the nukes and the world should stop the US from building it. The world will be less peaceful unless everyone has the shield.
I have to disagree. If we get anti-nukes we will have no need for nukes ourselves. If we don't trust anti-nuke lasers to work "in a pinch" we must realize that having and launching nukes ourselves does not help us in the least bit. I agree that the nuke sheild may lead to war, but only because nations have the security of a "safer" war where the world is not destroyed as a result. I would rather have a land torn by war than a land torn by nukes.
If we get the anti-nukes working 100% then our nukes become a viable offensive weapon, so we’d keep them and more consider using them, if only for leverage in negotiation. If the anti-nukes can’t be trusted to work, then you’re right, we’re back to square one; the anti-nukes are a waste, but we still need our nukes for mutually assured destruction (MAD). Either way the anti-nukes are bad, just another step in the arms race.
I believe SDI/StarWars, whatever thy call it next is a is a colossal and dangerous ruse (also a very sweet quiver of defense contracts). Potential enemies of the US will see right through it, and will watch with glee as Uncle Sam spends trillions on a fantastical 3-dimensional Maginot Line.
Jets with lasers on them and ground based stations are becoming close reality. Don't worry about people laughing at us, they'll only do that if they are complete idiots (not a good thing for leaders of countries [cough:bush]). Starwars won't work, but we do have alternatives. Sure it would be great for the US if we kept our nukes as leverage, but I think we would be complete assholes if we did that. Nukes are useless to the United States given that the strength of our army is enough to take over plenty of backwater countries that would try to nuke us. Thus a nuke would just piss the entire world off at us (sound familiar?) and spread radioactive hazards. Anti nukes are bad huh. Thats got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Why the hell do you want us to keep nukes? Are you saying we are GOING to keep the nukes or you WANT us to keep them.
