View Full Version : No congrats, Porfiry
You took the easy way out. You could have asked for donations much earlier. You could have explained your economics and how much you needed. All these things have happened, with success. See Blender. See Perl. See kuro5hin.
Porfiry 10-25-02, 06:00 PM What's your problem, sir? The "easy" way out would be to shut sciforums down entirely. Don't tempt me with your ingratitude.
I've been trying to explain success stories. There's some common threads to them. Those that explain how much they need tend to get more--and this is in no way new information. It's been the same for faith healers, street musicians, whatever. You waited too long, and apparently got desperate enough to accept astrology/psychic ads on a "sciforums"?
You already have my money, and I'm glad enough that for some time it was operating on donations without ads.
EvilPoet 10-25-02, 07:26 PM Porfiry: Correct me if I am wrong - didn't you
already address the issue of content as far
as the ads were concerned in this thread? (http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=12159)
grazzhoppa 10-25-02, 07:47 PM psshh....Porfiry is doing a fabulous job managing this site. He has already put his own money and time into this, and is very responsive to the members on this board. I don't know what more you could ask from him!
He even spent more time getting the ads and making the deals.
I don't know how the ads could really bother you.

Blender and Perl are software projects, and have absolutely nothing to do with anything. kuro5hin was shut down for months (so long that I stopped visiting all-together, and have never returned to that site out of indifference). Your 'stories' aren't very relevant.

The advertisers were chosen by myself. And so far the advertisements have generated $0. What I choose to place on sciforums is my business.
I'm sure I read somewhere Fen was leaving.
Don't forget your hat, Fen.
Asguard 10-27-02, 02:14 AM time to change the locks:D
I guess that Fen has also decided not to make any further "contributions" to magazines and newspapers, cable TV... those nasty nasty ads. Wasn't his money enough?
I'm only speaking for myself, but I'm sure a few others would feel the same. For me the forums is the second port of call after reading my email. As I see it, and from what I understand, this is Dave's own project, he's been financing it and running it for a long time now, and those of us who come here are enjoying the privilege of communicating with people from other countries and cultures, exchanging ideas and making friends - all at no cost to us. I don't know how he does it, and I don't know how much it costs to run, but I'm grateful that he is. I know he's been thanked many times for doing this, but that does not give anyone the right to criticize or dictate how things should be run. If Fen was a religious person and donated to the church, or even if he donates to charity, it does not give him the right to become part of the administration.
When I see someone being critical of anything to do with the forums it has the same effect of watching someone who's just been given a gift say to the giver "this isn't good enough" - you can't help but think 'what an ungrateful bastard'. Thats how I feel and that's why I'll speak up when Dave is attacked for the way the forums are run.
Just my opinion.
Thanks
Teri
Actually, Sciforums is set as my homepage :D
E-mails come second
grazzhoppa 10-28-02, 06:38 AM This is my home(page) too :D
Hee hee, its too addictive.
On another note, Fen, you're an ungrateful git. Stop being so petty and get over it.
Porfiry deserves to get money for this place, hell, I should start paying rent as I'm here most of the time (please, oh please don't charge me rent, I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves)
Thank you for reading my mind and saying it Teri 2.
Hey Fen,
If Porf was a <i>Wiseguy</i>(Pun intended)he would have killed you already...;)
and BTW,did you just had a bad and bitchy day that you are p***in' off at sciforums?
bye!
I'm the one who gave money. I gave a relatively insignificant amount (around $48), but I would have given more if I could see what was needed. I believe Porfiry is the one being ingrateful.
Ok, fairs fair, but answer me this. What in the blue hell does Ingrateful mean????
I still think you're an idiot btw
You could have handled this situation sooooooo much better
Porfiry 10-28-02, 05:55 PM I'm the one who gave money.
The entire point of a voluntary donation is that it is free of conditions and stipulations. Donating does not give you any more say in how the site is run. If it did, it would not be a 'donation'.

Am I talking about law here? Besides, in the real world, donaters influence things by witholding donations if things go wrong. I'm just advising you that I'm much less likely to donate with ads showing up (which apparently you don't pay for). Congradulations, you have a bunch of poor sycophants marching behind you and no money in your pocket.
which apparently you don't pay for
Of course he doesn't pay for ads. They are supposed to pay him. Get it the right way round :bugeye:

No shit, Sherlock. But it looks to me like you're throwing a hissy fit because your previous donation isn't able to pull influence. And any promise of future donations from you doesn't appeal to me enough to care what you are saying. Even losing you as a member doesn't seem to bother the community, and so it doesn't bother me either.
Administrator,
I recently downloaded Explorer 2002, which is a minor variation of IE 6.0 browser. I recommend it to all of my other sciforum brothers & sisters. Actually it kinda uses IE explorer, but adds a few good advantages over IE 6.0 (Internet Explorer).///
Except for a few advanced user inconveniences, IE 2002 is good at the doing the very thing that sciforums needs~~~~to click on the money links ! ! ! ! ! !<img src="http://www.sciforums.com/images/icons/icon14.gif">
BY a simple configuration of IE 2002, I am able to "multiple click" on the advertising links that El' President'e has provided for us. I don't get popups at all, but just little squares at the bottom right hand of my screen ! ! I can close these windows without ever having to look at them!
It's so quick and easy that I clicked over a hundred times already at the various advertising links. In fact, I am now automatically clicking the the advertising links (about twenty times) before I ever read the posts.:D   :D
Good job, Dave. <img src="http://www.sciforums.com/images/icons/icon14.gif">
I hope to do my part in paying our bills by simply twitching (clicking) on the best, easiest, cheapest, least inconvenient, & most considerate way that Dave could provide~~~~so we can argue and insult each other in the future~~~.:D
I'll have to check back and try to find the link to "EXPLORER 2002."It's a free download that is written by some Euro guy......If I find it I'll post the link for other sciforums members.
PS. It doesn't conflict with the normal INTERNET EXPLORER versions & you can switch between the browser with a simple click ! ! !
NightFall 10-30-02, 12:53 AM if it hasn't already been done.. can you escort someone on the general basis of "we dont like you, now go away" if its a completely unanimous vote?
... just a question......
Charon - I think Dave said that clicking on the ads doesn't create any income. You have to buy something.
Sorry - nice idea though.
After a bit of back/research, I think that this is a place to download IE2002.
http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/misctools/fwbrowser.shtml
This page also has a shitload of other browers that I have yet to try.........if you find a better one that will make money for sciforums!!!!!!~~~~then name it & post the link!!!!!
That sucks chris ! ! ! !<img src="http://www.sciforums.com/images/icons/icon8.gif">
.....................................     ...........
Whatever happened to the 'crooked old days,' when a guy could make millions of dollars by getting (lotsa) people to click on a link???????
BS!!!!!! Dave needs to put up links that will pay a penny per click! We could put sciforums in the black within a few weeks, as well as provide a yearly fund for our annual sciforum's barbeque & astronomy meeting~~~~~a week long event held at various places, in various countries, by the members of sciforums, who hold large parcels of land that are conducive to the partying aspect of "The Un-principal-ed mind."
Sciforums is pattern~fractal-like~..., with it's energy derived by the many aspects of the minds which converge here to ~~~~become more.........
Sciforums is in itself a science project...an atttempt to become greater than the sum of it's parts.
As a matter of defacto, we are all willing participants.
As I have previously offered, I again offer my energies during my net time, to further this wonderful website.

NightFall 10-30-02, 02:11 AM perhaps we could buy back the use of our av's and sigs??
Hey Nighty,

notme2000 10-30-02, 03:11 AM this site is awesome, just plain awesome. I can't believe someone would make such a stink about one tiny little ad put in the corner. This site wouldn't exist if it weren't for him, so stop bitching about that ad and click on it a couple thousand times! Talk about ungrateful! I for one do not even notice the ad!
