Twenty years ago, on May 16, 1984, most of the world believed that we had lost a comedic legend forever. This has turned out to be what will inevitably be known as the greatest comic prank ever conceived. Andy Kaufman, by all accounts, is alive and well at age 55 and is now living in New York City on the upper west side. To his loyal supporters and fans, Andy says "sorry about faking my death," in a recent interview with ABC News at his apartment. In order to reach legendary comic status and seal his place in the history of performance art, he said it was "necessary to go away for twenty years."

No way! This can't be real? Can it be real? I don't know... It can't be true... Is he really back? What the hell?

Andy Kaufman's official site has been launched at:

Wes, it really is playing with my head. It seems like something he would do, and his story seems legit.

Drudge Retort: Andy Kaufman 'It's good to be back!' (http://www.drudge.com/weblog/005148.html)

This cannot be real.

I think it's fake. It says ABC interviewed him. Why isn't there a link to ABC? I'm searching ABC news right now. There's no way he could pull this off so many years. It says his parents even thought he was dead. No way.

The story on Yahoo is the same as the one on his blog site. It's a press release with no substantiation. If ABC had this, it'd be front page news on their site. Bob Zmuda is probably behind this whole thing.

I thought he was Bob Zmuda? Didn't he at least pretend to be him at some point? Or vice-versa?

Do you believe or have anything to do with the news today of Andy's return?

Absolutely not

That's the last word on the Andy Kaufman Lives site. :p

I think he and Zmuda were buddies. Zmuda would sometimes play that lounge singer guy he did (blankin on the name). Probably pretended to be him on other occasions as well. Hell, who knows for sure though. Zmuda might have been fake the whole time, just setting up the fake death. I doubt it though.

I'm no Andy Kaufman expert, most of what I know about him comes from Man in the Moon.

Edit: Zilch on ABC news. Maybe they meant Australian Broadcosting Corp. Didn't search that site. :p

I don't know how the press release people got the name Ernst & Young, but that's not the auditor we used to do the DNA testing. They are much too reputable to get involved in this kind of sordid task, much akin to parenthood testing. Also, it wasn't ABC News that interviewed me. It was some British entertainment mag -- apparently I'm huge over there.

Read the site. :)

doh! Must have missed that. Still seems suspicious. If it's true, we'll all know soon enough. That might even drive the war off the front page for a minute or two. Who's next? Bruce Lee? Elvis?

Elvis IS alive, or was not to long ago.

He isn't coming back here that's for certain. I'm afraid this is just another hoax!

This is something Andy would do...so who knows.

...Most important, if the Andy Kaufman I remember — the brilliant, unpredictable, erratic, and unique comic genius — had finally emerged from hiding twenty years after faking his own death, I have no doubts that he'd find a much more imaginative way of revealing his return than a free press release and a rather ordinary blog.

My thoughts exactly.

His corpse should be exhumed and verified. Or was he presumably cremated?
