    Russia tests superstrength bomb: military
    Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:09PM EDT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has tested the world's most powerful vacuum bomb, which unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast, the military said on Tuesday, dubbing it the "father of all bombs".

The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow's role on the international stage.

"Test results of the new airborne weapon have shown that its efficiency and power is commensurate with a nuclear weapon," Alexander Rukshin, Russian deputy armed forces chief of staff, told Russia's state ORT First Channel television. The same report was later shown on the state-sponsored Vesti channel.

"You will now see it in action, the bomb which has no match in the world is being tested at a military site."

It showed a Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber dropping the bomb over a testing ground. A large explosion followed.

Pictures showed what looked like a flattened multi-storey block of flats surrounded by scorched soil and boulders. "The soil looks like a lunar landscape," the report said.

"The defense ministry stresses this military invention does not contradict a single international treaty. Russia is not unleashing a new arms race."

Some of the more retarded political posturing I have seen as of late.

"Hey, you know these weapons you developed in the 1960s? Well we built one a little bigger!" Yawn. Ok Russia, go on with your bad self!

Also, lol @ the "power of a nuclear blast" comments. Ah, no. The smallest warhead in the US stockpile has a yield of ten times this Russian thermobaric weapon when set on its lowest setting. This is why I keep saying that journalists and politicians should be required to take a few physics classes in college. It would save them some future embarassment, for sure.

I heard on the news this morning that Russia is referring to it as "The Father of all Bombs". I hope someone was being a smartass because otherwise it just sounds lame.

yeehaw! Now all Russia needs is a small scale war where it can test the bomb properly!

    Can't wait.

remember all the excitement by the western media on the pictures of the precision guided ammunition during the gulf war? And how the people loved watching people being bombed to shit!

Well, I do hope they mount a camera on these fuckers.

So we can see how disgusting our modern society is.

How is it any different than the Roman Empire, Vikings, Persians, etc? The weapons may change, but man doesn't.

It's a pretty horrible weapon but so far they haven't used it on anyone but the US did use something similiar in Iraq. I'm also willing to bet that the US is still outspending the Russians by a large amount on weapons development. So it comes off to me as posturing.

As for Russia giving the bomb the Islamic terrorists that's pretty ludicrous, especially since you seem to recognize that they're most likely to be developing this for Chechnya.

well, Putin just dissolved the Russian government with parliament elections less than 3 months away, so he's on some kind of roll.

Sorry I read the story too quickly this morning, we tested the MOAB prior to invading Iraq. So I guess it was just posturing on our part too.

No, they've always had an obsession with weapons. Not unlike, say, India & Pakistan with their fervent nuclear development programs or the EU in their development with many new weapons technologies. There's nothing American about war or weapons. In fact, it's a pretty goddamned global enterprise.

    Notes Around

    Notes around:

General: For those who haven't actually clicked the topic link and read the article, do so. Much of the article reflects the narrative that accompanies a video segment available at Reuters, including what appears to be a test detonation of the new FOAB.

Echo3Romeo: Our Marines have apparently been using a small thermobaric weapon referred to as "SMAW-NE", which is manufactured by Talley Defense Systems. See David Hambling's November, 2005 blog post at DefenseTech.org for a starting point.

MaxG: U.S. officials threatened to use the MOAB in the current Iraq war, but I haven't yet found anything that says we've used it in that conflict. MOAB's predecessor, the BLU-82 ("Daisy Cutter"), was used in the first Gulf War, and also has made its presence known in our current Afghan conflict. Two interesting notes about the BLU-82: according to the Federation of American Scientist, eleven BLU-82s were dropped during Desert Storm; a BLU-82 apparently costs a little over $27,000.

So the US has the right to test and create their own weapons, which fall into the hands of Israeli terrorists, but Russia does not have the right to develop their own weapons?

Hell, if they do start becoming a major world power again, that's better for us! Hopefully if we get training, funding, etc from them we can actaully modernize our military

The problem isn't the lack of soldiers, or brave ones at that

We have brave soldiers. We have a relatively large military. We have the training and organization

What we are lacking is the hi tech equipment that our neighbor has. If only, if only!
