View Full Version : New grass to cut Global Warming !
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Earth/New_grass_to_tackle_global_warming/articleshow/3025084.cms
A new grass that cows can eat that will decrease their methane output, which "should" help reduce global warming. Woo Hoo !
I feel cooler already.
This cow problem is more serious than I thought, Estonia's taxing farmers with cows for the methane they put out !

besides indistry cows are the biggest producers of greenhouses gases
Orleander 05-10-08, 02:16 PM who grows grass for cows? Who actually seeds a field for cows?
Captain Kremmen 05-10-08, 02:41 PM who grows grass for cows? Who actually seeds a field for cows?
erm.....alll cow farmers maybe?
The answer to this is so obvious that I wonder why you asked.
Hmm. Exciting news. Now we just need more trees back.

no. they grow alfalfa and hay to feed cows during the winter. In the fall, spring, summer, they roam the pasture. Farmers don't plow up and plant fields for cows to eat off of. They eat whatever has always grown there.

I can see you aren't very experienced in farming or ranching (and neither is pjdude). I was a cattleman for many years and have reconditioned several pastures by killing of the original growth and planting new or improved grasses.
Among thoss have been Bahia, Tifton bermuda and Fescue-41 (the latter for winter grazing). It's also common to take a field that was used for cropping in the spring and summer and plant it in a cover crop such as arrowleaf clover or vetch and let the cows graze that also during the winter. Other alternatives to that are rye and oats.

grew up on a farm in the Sandhills of NE. There wasn't a field anyone EVER plowed for their cows to eat off of. They grew corn, cut it and what was left over the cows could eat. Stalks were ground up for silage. But it was NEVER planted for them. Alfalfa/Hay was grown elsewhere and saved for winter.
Cows are expensive to raise and if they will eat weeds, then that's what they are fed.
I guess it depends on where you raise your cows and what your profit margin is.

I never plowed up a single field in order to improve the pasture. That would be a very poor practice. If you had had a cattle farm you would know there are much better ways of doing it. Overseeding is the most common. Herbicide is next. Plowing a pasture is NEVER done. Subsoiling, yes - but never plowing!
And allowing one's cows to simply eat weeds is about the dumbest thing any cattleman could ever do!!! Raising cattle is all about converting forage into meat - and weeds cannot do it.
Orleander 05-10-08, 07:39 PM well, we just moved them from field to field and it all looked like weeds to me. We never changed it, never plowed it, never seeded it. I never cared enough to find out what they were eating, but I do know we never changed it.
Sold them at the sale barn and made a nice profit.

There was probably more going on than you were aware of.:) To really make beef production hum like it should, the pastures need to be fertilized and limed (to maintain proper nutrition and pH for grass growth.)
And you mentioned alfalfa earlier. For over 95% of the people who produce beef, alfalfa is never used as winter feed, It's far too expensive and rich in protien for beef cattle - it will actually bloat them pretty easily. Dairy cows are different - they need it for high milk production.
If anyone is really serious about beef production (as opposed to just something to do on the side on a farm) they will MAKE their pastures more productive. Unimproved pasture can take three or more acers to support a single cow. But an improved pasture - with one of the grasses I mentioned - can carry a cow and her calf on just one acre.

I don't have to assume anything about your ignorance of several subjects - you prove that yourself here very often.
As I said before, I'm a very experienced cattleman and have been for ages. You will NOT see any real cattleman forcing his cattle to eat weeds NOR would you dare feed alfalfa to beef cows - too much danger of bloating and killing them. I also doubt if you even know what bloating means to a cow.
I suspect that all you saw at your grandparents place was one, two or three milk cows - and you're basing ALL of your so-called "knowledge" on nothing more than that.
And I wasn't being condescending in the least - I called ignorance ignorance - because that's exactly what it is. That shoe fits you - now wear it.

just because i don't have the same view as you doesn't make me ignorant. in fact most people most people who are ignorant just ignore and insulting people who hold different views which would make you ignorant because you do that very often.. and i was basing my knowledge on conversations with my granddad about the cows on his farm and as i said in my previous post meat cows could be difference. a detail you saw fit to over look. as for my ignorance on other subjects i know what your reffering to and i am still waiting for you to give sources of refutation but than you have never shown me even the slightest shred of basic common human decency. You have always been a condasending asshole to me. just because i am half your age doesn't maen i don't know anything. you are clearly a smart person but you still have a lot to learn about how debate and how to treat people.

Yep, I chose to ignore that AND the statement you made about knowing more than me. That'll be the day - you haven't lived long enough. Besides, how many college degrees do you hold? You strike me as someone who just barely managed to sneak through high-school and has never even been inside a college or university.
No, dude, you have absolutely no authority to tell me how to treat you (or anyone else for that matter.) Just like many of the members here do, I call it like I see it.
And I don't stutter when I type as you just did above, "... in fact most people most people who are..." :D

that nice you strike me as someone who never learn to think for themselves but just spout what your parents taught you to think.
and when you start using logic and earn how to debate than you can start talking about how much your degrees are worth.

Oh, give it up, dude! You've no idea what transpired between my parents and I. In fact, I was always a bit of a rebel in that I searched for my own answers regardless of what anyone told me. Of course, I did consider the source and once I found out someone was reliable I would put more faith in what they said.
I'm also highly logical and place it FAR above emotion - in direct contrast to yourself, I might add. I'm more than able to debate with anyone of intelligence but see no reason to waste time and effort on the thick-headed.
All I do here is present facts (and occasionally expose stupid or ignorant people.) I've no ambition to make friends of anyone here, especially since I've got plenty of those in 'real life.'
Consider this issue closed. I've clearly shown - and with your own admission - that you were basing what you claimed to know about cattle and forages on a few limited conversations with a family member. So you still know VERY little about the subject - just as I said in the beginning.
So just bug off and leave the adults alone. Orleander knew much more about this than you do.

all you do is post facts. your a riot. stating your opinion as fact is not the same as stating a fact. You act like every other person smart person i have met with an ego you think your always right and the other is always wrong. how the fuck do you know what i knew. You don't shit about me or what i knew you just wrote me off a kid from the first and treated me like shit from then on. You want me to treat you like an adult learn how to act and debate like one.

Who's debating? Not me!
I told you I was VERY experienced in the cattle business. And I did post facts - you're the one who posted semi-intelligent opinions based on almost nothing. My facts are based on experience while most of what YOU say really ARE opinions!! Stuff that up your pipe and smoke it. (Besides, I don't like people who are too lazy to find a job!)

i have a job lined asshole i'm just waiting to here back from them. And assuming that i am to lazy to find a job is well being a condesending asshole. and my comment about stating opinion as fact was about some of our previous encounters. your a riot.
