I like it. It's different. I like change. It looks good. Why was it changed? What was so wrong with the old one?

Nice but what does that little symbol mean?

Also the white thread title against black ground would look better if it was in a different font. Something thinner and more elegant and possibly the right side could be made smaller (the users options panel). It looks primitive so big.

Good job though.

not bad. :o

I think it looks awesome, I especially like the black background

Dude ... seriously ... that's black?

I do like the look, though. Perhaps the contrast is a little hard between the title and the rest of the page but that doesn't seem problematic as yet.

As to the font ... Is there any way you can force PC users to cope with Charcoal or Chicago?

yeah well black, dark gray, whatever... (hey I am not colourblind) :p

was it meant to looking a symbol on the periodic table? Because it does to me, and I think that's pretty neat.

eddymrsci

ElectricFetus

It’s a bird having sex with a burnt rattle snake corpse.

Is there any objection to me getting a tattoo of that symbol? I like it, it's cool. What does it mean though? I mean, hastily getting a tattoo of a symbol which represents, or symbolizes, something I don't agree with would be quite foolish.

If you zoom right in on the symbol it looks like a stick man who's legs have been bent the wrong way... so it could be something like the international chiropractor symbol
Prob not but its had me thinking all day, im sure i've seen it somewhere before...
eh nevermind :m:

The symbol looks Tibetan. I'm looking at a couple of candidates for what it is but neither is an exact match.

Note on Edit:

Oh. Duh. Is it really as simple as uh ... well, as it seems?

It kinda looks like a zodiac symbol... Could that be so? Someone, anyone, help....

Looks like a G and a V with some kind of accent thing above it...Maybe it's a freaky DW for David Watanabe?

I bet it has some deep and significant meaning...or something that was whipped up in Photoshop because it looked cool.

Fuq that, I'm not getting Dave tattooed on my body......

(I really don't think there's any tremendous secret to it.)

An obscure hint: For those who downloaded the file and opened it in one or another application ... where did the file go to? For me it was on my desktop. I was bouncing around through a search engine for a while and then I was looking at it in Preview and then I grabbed it to throw it away when the obvious revealed itself to me..

An obscure hint

Why the obscure and not the overt? Seriously, help me out here - what does it mean, if anything?

My theory:

The symbol looks Tibetan. I kept coming across characters that were close, but not spot-on. Knowing that Tibetan lacks a certain uniformity we're accustomed to in the West, I kept looking for Tibetan alphabets to see if one drew characters any differently.

And then I noticed the filename. "MainLogoOm.gif".

And I just happened to be looking at the right Tibetan alphabet page.

I was looking at this chart (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/9594/chart3.gif), which is taken from the page listed below. In the second row, there is a symbol for "aM."

It would appear that the symbol is merely a Tibetan character for the meditative syllable, "Om."

(I just went back and checked one of the other pages I was looking at, and the character doesn't appear there (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/tibetan.htm).)

Your right! At the very least its a Tibetan symbol, I think it looks most like a Tibetan "o" as described on that second link of yours, your first link by the way does not work.

an>roid.v2,

Are you implying that perhaps Porfiry has spent to much time fondling his own underwear? :D

It looks like a branding symbol to me... I have to commend Porf on keeping sci constantly changing, it's never boring here.

And then I noticed the filename. "MainLogoOm.gif".

Indeed, it wasn't meant to be a real mystery. I kind of presumed there'd be some granola or fairy here who'd recognize it instantly. See, if Bebelina were still around...

An so the mystery is solved, does tiassa win a prize?

My respect, but he already had that. The only other thing I've got to offer is a seat on the governing council of the shadow government.

The new logo sure beats the blocky thing we've had for a while.

I must admit, though, I was fond of the symbol on the logo which preceded the "ban the bomb" symbol which we had in the lead up to the Iraq war.

Being almost a quarter of an artist myself having spend two tortures years in art school I must say that I really like the logo from an aestethical viewpoint.

Really? The links aren't working? The first link is a chart taken from the Geocities link at the bottom. One or the other should work; they're both working for me at the moment. But I actually tried to tag the chart image into the post, and it wouldn't go. How odd.

If the larger page works and the chart doesn't, scroll down to the bit about Sanskrit. The image will be there. Second row. (The "o" at the one page that was working for you, WCF, was a marker along the way. It's how I knew I was on the right track. After that it was just a matter of farming pages with Tibetan alphabets, because eventually one of them was bound to be different.)

But ... yeah. And then I noticed the filename. Something tells me that if I'd started there to begin with, it wouldn't have taken as long as it did.

I'll skip the story of how I recognize Tibetan characters in the first place. It's boring.

This - http://sciforums.com/images/MainLogo2.gif - is an alternate version I was considering, but wasn't sure what the response would have been.

I don't like it as much as I like the new one. Besides, why a pot leaf? Can't we have a friggin' beer mug for once?

From my point of a view, as a wannabe-drop-out-graphic-designer, it's awesome. Good work, Dave.
