I'm interested in Purchasing a new processor, a 1ghz chip at a really cheap price, as opposed to my old 600mhz which came with my computer. Now I just got two questions.
1) I can't remember what the range of my motherboard is, and can't find any documentation in the bios or elsewhere (any noticeable that is) How would I go about finding it.
2) I think my present chip is an intel one. THe one I can get cheap is AMD duron, but not like 1600+, just 1GHz. Is AMD find too, cause I know athlon is incompatible :bugeye:

Um, no; you cannot use any AMD processor in any Intel motherboard. You see, AMD and Intel are direct competitors. One wouldn't dare make a motherboard chipset for the other companies processor (unless they intentionally bugged it to work crappy as hell).
So we have neutral motherboard chipset makers like VIA, that carter to both sides.
Processors fit into a socket. Intel calls theirs a slot, AMD calls theirs a socket (I like the term socket as it describes the look of the white plastic square better).
They are also named by their number of pins. Intel's P3 class processors are Slot 370 (The P3, Celeron, and Tulitan). I don't know what AMD's K6 or Duron processors use, but their Thunderbird and Athlon XP's are Socket 462
I think Intels P4 line is like 478
If you have an intel board that supports a 600MHz pro, it is proly a slot 370 with a P3 or Celeron currently in it. It will likely support up to 1GHz P3, but not Tulitans (if it is an older motherboard, Tulitans go up to 1.4GHz I think)
Don't be fooled by the troubles of the P4's, the Pentium 3's are good class processors with a good core (the new models, you may have an older Coppermine 100MHz FSB).
In other words, get a 1GHz P3. Find out exactly what motherboard you have (If you can't get it through your BIOS or Windows, you may have to open your case).
Thanks for the informative reply! :) You know quite a bit about computer inerds!
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure my motherboard is intel. I got the Intel Inside!tm sticker pasted on the front. The chip was reaalllly cheap from what understand. I think about the equivelant of 30 American dollars.
That's okay, hopefully this warehouse place will get some 1GHz intel chips soon.
