And they suck, see for yourself ---> here

I saw a palmtop almost a year ago that puts all these to shame. It was modelled after the hard drive-based MP3 players out now: it had a 10 GB memory that you could install your own software on, which I thought was great because I have alot of old software that I like to use and the new versions cost too much (and why would I need them); built-in cell phone with one of those earphone/microphone things that snap onto your shirt collar; an external CD burner; wireless full-sized foldup keyboard, wireless email and web browsing; and...

... and it had a special jack for a head-up eyepiece adapter providing a 17-inch equivalent display (TOTALLY RADICAL !!!! And totally discrete too !!!). If it weren't a prototype I would have bought it on the spot!

Exactly, it was a prototype. I saw the same devices. They look great...problem is..they're REALLY REALLY expensive. These new devices are so ceap that just about ANYONE can afford them. That alone is the reason they don't suck. For the right amount of money, you can buy just about anything...if it doesnt exist, then you can pay someone to research and develop it. But you're not gonna get anything like that prototype for a decent price.

The reason I consistently turn my nose up as PDAs is that :

    1. Many PDAs are small enough to be solar powered, but are not. The cheap little screen could be replaced with a photovolaic cell and a head-up display.

    2. I'm not happy with the software permanently installed on them. I want to install my own. I need at least 300-500 MB memory to do that, and say 5 GB extra for my personal files. An external CD burner is great for backing stuff up, but if they want to use the CD burner as primary storage in place of a hard drive they should make it solar powered too, with automatic solar powered defrag.

    3. Most websites and software are designed for 800x600 resolution minimum. PDA screens are not big enough (unless they have scroll bars which suck), and no innovation is taking place to reduce the price of head-up displays that could achieve this.
