My monitor died on me. Bought a new monitor. The old monitor plugged into a 25+ pin slot on the back, the new monitor is a 15 pin. I have a 15 pin slot on the back, but the computer does not recognize the monitor. Help!

But I already have a slot for it on the back of the computer. And the store's closed today. (On my laptop BTW).

Make sure your monitor is connected to the external VGA port before booting up. Because if you wait till after that your laptop may have its own complicated process for enabling the port via this or that function key. And I assume you already made any necessary adjustments in the Settings tab of the Display Properties in the Control Panel, if whatever OS the computer is using even has that. I mean, it sounds like an older laptop if you've already burned-out a monitor.

This is a desktop computer I am talking about. I am using my laptop because my desktop's monitor is broken.

If both monitors don't boot but the fans are spinning it may be that your MB isn't posting. You need to check that it gets to windows, i.e. you hear some sound and know it booted. Otherwise it not posting can be caused by faulty hardware, remove all components but the essentials and see if it posts then.

Is the new monitor linked to the MB default port or through a graphics card? Also wasthe old monitor the default port or the graphics card?

Sounds like your old monitor may have connected via DVI, and the new one sounds like composite video - a step backwards in terms of quality. Doesn't the new one have a DVI connector?
