Here is the dilemna.

I have my main computer upstairs and the wires and all that jazz are up stairs. I have a cable modem. I would like to be able to hook up multiple computers to have internet capabilities in the basement. Without poorly running wires through noticeable areas.

So my thought is this.

I have the cable come in and hit up a wireless router. Which routes the signal to a Switch/hub in the basement and from that I can use standard ethernet wires to each computer in the network.

So I go Cable Modem to Wireless Router. Wireless Router to Switch. Switch to computers. Will this work or is there a flaw in my thought? Will a wireless router be able to send signal to a switch? Will there be way to many data collisions once I get to the switch that everything will run slow?

Thanks for your help.

Don't bother with a seperate switch downstairs, use another wireless router with built in switch (most have one built in anyway, so unless you have > 4 computers you'd be sorted). But yes, if you hook up a switch to a wireless router or accesspoint (so long as you stay clear of any 'WAN' ports) they will talk to one another. I have a wireless router connected to a router connected to a modem. Even the chinese students next door can get connectivity with their bloody wirelessrouter! (don't worry you can password)

If you get wound up (like I did) over the configuration just ask. Just make sure only one of them is DHCP, and the other's IP is chosen to be something outside of the autoassign range but inside the subnet mask.

I'll give in a little more to the scheme and tell me what you think is best.

I have a game night once a month and right now, it is just 7 TV's with Xboxes all hooked together. There is a big demand from my friends to have PC capability to play Battlefield 2 or World of Warcraft. I said, ok, I'll get the internet down there and in a couple months, have monitors, mouses, and keyboards and you'll need to bring your own CPU unit. Some have laptops where they can connect wirelessly and others do not. So I am trying to make it so I can offer the wired or wireless option easily enough.
I know the new Xbox 360 has the wireless capability and the PSP does also which is really nice, but many still prefer wires.

Any further thoughts?
