Has anyone heard the debut from Nellie McKay? I can't believe I'm saying this about an album by a 19-year-old ingenue from England, but damn it's actually good. I got a free copy (one of the perks of working in radio) and it has grown into an obsession...

And meanwhile, what teen singer/songwriter does America push? Avril fucking Lavigne... who didn't even know how to pronounce David Bowie's name at the Grammy Nominee ceremony. Yeah. Real genuine rocker there.

Long live Nellie. Off with Avril's head.

Avril Lavigne's from Canada, and her career's pretty much dead in the water, since her current single is getting nowhere near the play that "Complicated" got.

Well, Alanis Morissette is from Canada too, but our friends up north didn't exactly "produce" the Alanis we all know either.

But yes, I'm pleased Avril's new single has not yet been chosen as the latest sociological torture experiment (read: Clear Channel administered hit song).

With the exception of a handful of punk bands, I'd say Canada's musical contributions have been generally unimpressive.

Nice avatar, BTW.

Same to you. I just bought the complete Family Guy recently. Even got my mom to like it. Stewie always wins people over....

I didn't say anything was wrong with Alanis -- I only pointed out that her image was crafted by the American music industry despite her being Canadian.

Nellie McKay is a young singer/songwriter originally from England (now lives in New York) -- she combines everything from Tin Pan Alley to hip-hop, writes her own material, and sounds like Doris Day if she had been a sarcastic and surprisingly jaded nineteen-year-old. I'm not surprised you haven't heard her. She has yet to catch on, but trust me, she will if there is any justice in the world.

I found out she'll be dropping by our radio station tomorrow actually... should be interesting... if I manage to not to shit my pants. ;)
