Naming a group

I'd like to highlight the word 'group' in the title. Because this is something that's starting to anger me. And frankly, I'm surprised I've let it go on as long as I have. There is a trend going through music where an artist will go by their own name. Now, I'm not talking about Madonna or someone who basically just uses session artists to do the actual musical part of their work while they just sing and dance around. I mean someone like Avril Lavigne.

For starts, Avril is gorgeous. Okay, now that's out of the way she pisses the hell out of me. Here's a girl who plays guitar in a rock (pop-punk, actually, is more like it) group. She sings and plays rythem guitar. In her band is a drummer, another guitarist who does some lead work and a bassist. And what does she call the "group"? Avril Lavigne. Not a tad bit egotistical are we?

There seems to be a growing trend of this too. How about David Usher? And why not Pink? These are people that seem content to make themselves the only name recognized in a group effort.

    Sheryl Crow
    Alicia Keys
Kid Rock (though I think initially the band was just named after a nickname someone game him)
Chad Kroeger featuring Josey Scott (I would pay anyone every cent I ever earn if they could get the song Hero banned)

Anyway, the big one I despise is Avril. Go check out the websiet about 'her' music. It's called the Avril Lavigne site and in the Image section it just has pics of her. Not a mention of the band. It's all Avril.

    While I'm rating.......
The other things I really hate in music today are the complete fucking morons who use something like 'U' instead of 'you' in the title of a song. Do they think this looks cool? What kind of idiot thinks it's cool or impressive to say 'U' instead of 'you'??? These are the kind of people the world would be better without. Them and people who use a z instead of an s. Example; Pink's album is called "M!sundaztood". Why? Why do people think it's cool to show how stupid they are? When did it become a symbol of coolness (is that a word?) to PURPOSELY SPELL A WORD WRONG? WHY?? Can anyone get rid of these people? And this trait? Whoever gets rid of this becomes my new messiah.

Musicians, successful or not, are for the most part, uneducated. Their audiences or fans, are for the most part, also uneducated. There are exceptions to these rules, but not many.

Then there musicians with little or no taste. Ditto to their fans.

There are musicians with little or no talent. Their fans wouldn't know the difference.

Of course there are musicians with all these qualities; uneducated, tasteless and talentless. Strangely enough, they also have fans and are selling CD's.

We need not criticize the artists but instead should criticize the fans who don't know the difference between quality music and trash.

    Welcome to mass media.

It is the nature of writers to focus on whoever gets the limelight in the group. They think that this one person will have more appeal to their readership than the group. It is up to the group to iron this one out before it hits public. Either the group shares credit equally and it is enforced by all or just one becomes the focus. Even when the group does focus on equal credit there is the tendancy to put the leader in the limelight. (Such as Mik Jagger and The Rolling Stones) With the adulation of fans, promoters, agents, ect. pumping the ego, it is an easy trap to fall into. That you are bigger than life and the only one of the group to count. Then you get sites like what you refer to.

I think that the internet has had a lot to do with how the language is changing for our younger people. You have chat now that some are growing into and some have grown up with. In chat speed is the key to getting the message in. Shortcuts are taken in increasing the speed at which communications are completed. Especially chatting while gaming. This will change later on when it is found to communicate in business you must be a good bit more precise.

When I first came to sciforums, it was erksome to me for spelling to be out of wack so that you had to struggle to read it. It is no longer a big thing. I have realized finally that not all peoples communicate with the same words or even that the words have the same meanings.

Take our Aussie members for example. Has anyone noticed (that uses Americanized English) that the way their sentences are constructed and sometimes spelled seems a little strange? (I am sure that the opposite is true for them when they look at our writings. I use this for example and have no axe to grind over language use with these same members. They make their meanings clear.)

All I can tell you is chill out. Being upset over how someone spells a word is not an item you have control over. You will encounter it again and again on the internet so it is not what you will find at sciforums alone. It is not unique to this site.

    I'LL GET YOU YET GOOFYFISH!!!!!!!

Ever seen High Fidelity? Where the guy tells a customer not to buy a cd and the customer says 'but my daugher loves this music'. The guy then goes on about how his daughter is wrong and how opinions can be wrong. I'm somewhat known in school for going on rants about particular subjects when someone makes a completely stupid comment and I went on something of a 4-5 minute rant about how a musical opinion can be wrong to some people in my class earlier this year. That shut them up good.

Sad part is, it's actually true. I really did go on a 5 minute rant about how their opinion was wrong.

"Tyler, U need 2 calm down"

    Shut up, bizitch.

    wet1;
My comment about spelling words 'you' like 'U' was not directed at internet chatters, but at musicians. There's a song out there on the charts right now called "Down 4 U" and another called "U Don't Have To Call". In the "artist's" (and i use the term oh so loosely) case it has nothing to do with speed and everything to do with stupidity.

"All I can tell you is chill out. Being upset over how someone spells a word is not an item you have control over"

What? I don't have control over society? No fucking way. Since when? Haha. Honestly though there are times when I feel so superior to these people that it honestly shocks me that I don't have control over them. I'm sure everyone has convinced themselves at some point in their life that something was going to happen and were genuinly shocked when it didn't. Occasionaly I get that feeling. Like I just listen to this music and I hear some kid comment on how good it is and I just shake my head and go "When did I loose control over them?" and honestly mean it.

Hmmmm, maybe I'm dillusional? Ah well. Some day I'll get control over all the idiots. Some day.....

Tyler, I just heard that you(notice 'you'), do not have control over society!
    When did this happen?
Wait until more of your loyal subjects hear of this! We will not be silenced.

Seriously, it's the MTv Generation meets the X Generation (if I have my generations right). MTv used acronyms to look cool, the X Gen. uses similuar process. But instead they change words into letters/numbers.
The problem with the next Generation is- The older of us ie; those of us that can remember a time before Tyler, are going to have issues with communication.
If the current trend continues, in the future, paragraphs may consist of little more that eight letters or numbers and the world shall be plunged back into the literary darkness with the subsequent fall of Tyler.

How can we afford to traverse such a bleak future without the guideness of one so bold?

Hey Tyler, have you heard of the song "If U C Jordan" by Something Corporate? Add that to your list!

I think the whole shortening had to do with computers. Yes, computers and the lingo. HTML? It's "img src", and "bg"! Plus, as we progress, more and more of us will get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, so we have found ways to adapt to this painful experience by cutting down the amount we have to type.

And the fact that people enjoy imitating rappers. Example: "Yo mah homiez, wazup in heyre? Diz ain't nuttin butt an x-ampal of der degrehdayshion of deh langwage 1nce nown az Englizh." Translation: Yo, my homies, what is up in here? This is not nothing but an example of the degredation of the language once known as English. (ARGH, it pisses me off so badly!)

One thing that also bugs me to hell is this: €àÑ' t BéÉ BóThÉrÉd tÖ TéLL ¥ä. How am I supposed to read this?? Is it some strange, new language, where every single letter needs some sort of accent? I can't even begin to imagine how to pronounce it, then!

But back to the music issue:
Personally, I enjoy music, regardless of who makes it. I rarely care about a musician's image, as long as they can carry through with a good beat and a catchy tune. So does it really matter what name the group has given themselves? As long as they can cooperate under such a title, and produce music, who really cares? I mean, it's not like Avril Lavigne/David Usher/Pink/Usher/Britney Spears/Moby/Will Smith/J Englishman/Mariah Carey/Edwin/Johann Pachelbel (Pachelbel's Canon)/Howard Shore (composer of the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack)/Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart forced them into it, they had to have had an agreement before.

Yes! Skull! You got it right! This is what I've been saying for so long! Good call my man!

    "€àÑ' t BéÉ BóThÉrÉd tÖ TéLL ¥ä"

GOD YES! ARG! I have peers who put some crap in their icq like "|-|e`/ |*Ee|*s" and expect us to all read 'Hey Peeps' (of course those idiots also use words like 'peeps'). These people also should be removed from society. Or at least re-educated.

    "Avril Lavigne/David Usher/Pink/Usher/Britney Spears/Moby/Will Smith/J Englishman/Mariah Carey/Edwin/Johann Pachelbel (Pachelbel's Canon)/Howard Shore (composer of the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack)/Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart"

    1) Moby does nearly all his music (instruments and editing) on his own. I'm not a fan of his but I do know this
    2) Pacheldel/Mozart are composers. They weren't part of a band. They were just composers who wrote music themselves and then were asked to perform it.

"This is not nothing but an example of the degredation of the language once known as English."

Still, Ebonics almost became an acceptable alternative to English. I would have killed someone if I was into politics when this happened.

Woops, bad call on Moby, Howard Shore(this man is a genius!), Mozart and Pachelbel.

But really, if the people behind Avril Lavigne are okay with the band being called "Avril Lavigne", then shouldn't that make it all right? It is, after all, the musician's decision.

The thing is dude, the whole music industry is a crock of shit...

One artist is backed my producers, lyracists, managers blah blah blah it never was just one person, nor was it just a group... band, or singers may start out as their own, but what makes them famous is teh people that make them famous... does that take anything away from their music. I belive it does. In pop music especially. It is ineviteable....

what makes an artist an artist... brushes, paint, environment, people all influnce the artists, the artist simply expresses it, sometimes it is dictated by money, other times by passion. I tend to go for the music driven by the latter, however it is quite rare to find something that pure...
