View Full Version : NHL Playoffs, Who's gonna win the cup??

Its anyones game at this point. The big 4, Toronto, Carolina, Colorado and Detroit all have near (theoretically) equal chances of winning the cup. So whats your pick and why?

Personally, I'll back any Canadian Team except for Edmonton. So my picks obviously gonna be Toronto. But lets face it, Josephs keeping them in this thing. Carolina's the better team right now and we all know it.

And as for Detroit......I hate em with a passion. The only reason they got this far is because of $$$$. The team has a cold heart, and if history's taught us anything, those types of teams never win a thing. The avalanche (former nordiques) will topple the wings in game 6, only to be shot down in an emotional final.

I'm going with Wings. They are the stronger team and they have the home ice advantage. Which plays a huge part in a game seven!!

Obviously, I want Toronto to win. But let's face it, they don't even deserve to beat Carolina. Heart and grit got them where they are, now they're tired and the more talented team is going to win. Winner of Cup: Whoever wins the West in 5 games. Likely Detroit.

Whoever said 'What Cup?' does not deserve to live! :D :D :D

I said "What cup?". Australian, remember? There are two games here: cricket and football (Aussie Rules Football).

*Xev sends her goons to stuff the ballot box in support of Detroit*

Wings. Wings. Wings.

And as for Detroit......I hate em with a passion. The only reason they got this far is because of $$$$.

Ha! You're jealous. We have some of the best players because their bastard owner stiffed the Tigers on money. Detroit makes sacrifices to have such a good team. Cold heart? Bull!

The team has a cold heart, and if history's taught us anything, those types of teams never win a thing.

Yeah, only won the Stanley two years in a row.

Lesse, when's the last time Toronto won?

The avalanche (former nordiques) will topple the wings in game 6, only to be shot down in an emotional final.

Yep, right, and I'm going to head to the Bahamas with Olaugson to 'console' him. Uh huh.

Dream on!

"I said "What cup?". Australian, remember? There are two games here: cricket and football (Aussie Rules Football)."

Want a little background info? Off the top of my head, here's what I can offer:

The Stanley Cup was born in 1896 when Lord Stanley (the former Governer General of Canada) donated a, well, cup to be handed to the best amatuer hockey team in the Dominion of Canada. The first winners were the Montreal AAA (Amateur Athletic Association), followed by about 4 other Montreal teams. Basically, for the first while the Cup was given to the best team in Ontario or Quebec. In 1917 a couple guys decided to unite all the top leagues in Western, Central and Eastern Canada to form the National Hockey League. In early 1917 (before the NHL formed), the first Yankee team won the Cup, the Seattle Metropolitans). The first Stanley Cup winners were the Toronto Arenas, who folded the year after. In 1919 an odd situation occured where both teams in the finals became too sick to play, so there was no Cup winner (first and only time ever). The twenties saw Ottawa dominate and the first ever two years of American winners (N.Y. Rangers then Boston Bruins). Moving along a bit the NHL became a 6 team league for a long while with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks. Despite 4 teams of 6 being in the U.S., about 95% of all players were Canadian. The fifties was probably the best era of playoff hockey with Maurice Richard leading the healm. Maurice "Rocket" Richard set a record that still stands with 6 overtime winners in Stanley Cup finals series. He also became the first player ever to score 50 goals in 50 games. After the 1966-67 season (Toronto's last Stanley Cup ever), 6 more teams joined the league. There are currently 30 teams in the NHL (and fans pray to God no more come).

The Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in sports. In a thirty team league, 16 make the playoffs. There are two conferences, here's how the playoffs work:

Each Conference:
1st plays 8th
2nd plays 7th
3rd plays 6th
4th plays 5th

Winner 1/8 plays Winner 3/6
Winner 2/7 plays Winner 4/5

Winner 1-8/3-6 plays Winner 2-7/4-5

Winner of each Conference plays for Finals

Each series is a best-of-seven. A regular season is 82 games. So basically, by the Stanley Cup Finals the players have played about 100+ games of the hardest sport on the body on Earth.

There there. There's still hope and joy in the universe.....somwhere....presumably.....I guess......probably not though......

*Xev breaks down sobbing*

Edit to add:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

Invitus, William Ernest Henley.

Okay, Toronto came close to winning.........

It's all oneils fault!!! Toronto shoulda won that game. THey came very close.

Anyways, as I predicted Colorado will win. Just watch them dismantle Detroit, Tonight. If Toronto cant win, then COlorado will, and believe me, Colorado's gonna win!!!

Carolina's no match for Colorado.......
The flames are.... but unfortunately, they didnt do well enough to make the post season:confused:
