Washington D.C. (October 4, 2006) — The X PRIZE Foundation announced today the $10 million Archon X PRIZE for Genomics — A multi-million dollar incentive to create technology that can successfully map 100 human genomes in 10 days. The prize is designed to usher in a new era of personalized preventative medicine and stimulate new avenues of research and development of medical sciences.
Possible?
Desirable?
Future ethical problems of large scale 'genoming'?
X-prizes: a good system to stimulate breakthroughs? It seemed to work for the space x-prize.

Sounds tough, whats the current record for mapping a human genome?

In haste i could only come up with this:

The BBC story on this prize.
It currently costs millions of dollars and takes many months to sequence an individual's genome, encoded in DNA.

Thanks.
So whats the current practical uses for the genome other than giving insurance companies information on when and what you're likely to die of?
100 genomes 10 days
10 genome in a day
1 genome in 2,4h
... i think its a bit of unrealistic, considering that human genome isnt still 100% sequenced.

Aren't they looking for a system that will analyse and compute the 100 simultaneously though?
Sequencing a genome in 2.4 hours seems to be bordering on the paranormal.

There are no other limitations than doing 100 genomes in 10 days.
Parallel processing would be ok.

Well, we can rip out the bad genomes and make all people love thy fellow man, and give them big, sloppy kisses, and make all of us exactly the same so that we never argue about anything and conflict will cease to exist. I.e., we all become automatons ....neat, huh?

Youre saying it possible to manipulate our DNA in that way now? That's new's to me.
Maybe my inquiry wasn't crystal:
So whats the current practical uses for the genome map, other than giving insurance companies information on when and what you're likely to die of?
