    ...was put to sleep today. He was very old, had a lot of health problems, and it was just time I guess. I've had him since I was 7. I can barely remember a period in my life when he wasn't around. Please, this may seem dumb to some of you because you feel he's just a dog, but I'm asking you to please not say anything hurtful to me right now. I lost a best friend today. I loved him very much.

    A pet is fairly different to a feral animal, especially if they are brought into the family circle. They can learn a certain amount of language and pick up on moods or feelings. I'm guessing in this instance that will be our main loss, a companion that you don't just use as an excuse to go for W.A.L.K.s where you'd otherwise probably avoid should it be raining but also one that might settle down and sit with you should you be upset.

    I would say I'm sorry that you're dog was put to sleep, however if it truly was suffering it was the best thing for it. Obviously if you have any pictures you'll always have the memory of your lost "Friend". Obviously you can move on to other pets now, like: Men

    I remember yrs ago when we (my ex and I) had to finally put our dog down. He decided to go with him, while they put him to sleep. There is NO WAY I could go, I stayed home. When he got back it was the really the first time I ever saw him cry. He said he just kept petting him until he was gone.

    Thank you. Yeah it was the right thing, and part of me is happy because I know he's not in pain anymore. I'm glad for that.

    Hello. I've been expecting you for quite some time.
    Here, come sit beside us for awhile .
    and let me tell you about this old friend of mine.
    She might look tattered or maybe old
    But I won't say goodbye until you've been told.
    She had the brightest eyes I had ever seen,
    And wore a beautiful fur coat that would out shine a queen .
    She was never prissy but walked with an aire ......
    And oh so polite, you could take her most anywhere.
    She could run like the wind and could catch anything she chased
    But she protected and sat with me when I had problems to face.
    You could not find a friend nearly so dear.
    Because no matter the trouble she always stayed near...
    She has never asked for much from me;
    Just to love and respect her and I think you'll agree .
    To give her a good meal plus a nice warm bed is not much to ask ;
    When she has given me all her love and to her this was no task.
    Now I understand you have a schedule to keep.
    But I have a small favor before she nods off to sleep.
    Please fold your wings around her and let her feel young while in no pain ;
    Dear Guardian Angel of Pets ,
    please keep her safe and happy until I see her again.

    Mrow, you have my greatest sympathy and understanding. There can be no greater love than that between a dog and his human companion.

    I don't know what I'd do without my buddy. Rems, my English Yellow Lab, is the greatest animal on earth. Far superior to humans. He's pure joy and love. He's as intuitive a creature as nature has seen fit to place on the earth. Remington is 10 years old now and fast approaching his twilight. He will soon be placed to rest along side my departed friends: Winchester, Dixie and Kimber.

    My sincerest condolences.

    You did what you could. You showed him kindness for a lifetime, even allowing him to die in peace. What more could you do?

    I don't get it...why could the dog just die of old age?

    I do, but I don't have a photobucket account so I'm not sure how to post it.

    Go to www.imageshack.us , and upload it.

    Though I don't have a dog of my own, I'm always friends with any nearby dogs. My landlord had a Queensland Heeler named Pinky. She was a very smart, and sweet dog, and used to love to accompany me on walks. But then she got too old, and would just look at me as I walked by. One day after I had walked some distance past her, she surprised me by trotting up to me, as though she were going to go along the way she used to. But after catching up to me, she stopped, and then slowly turned around and walked home. It was so sad; it was as though she momentarily forgot how old she was, but then remembered. My landlord had her put to sleep not long after that.

    I'm sorry to hear that, mrow.

    It's hard to see an animal put down; maybe harder than a human because there's always the sense they don't understand what's happening or why. Rest assured you did the right thing, regardless. You knew what needed to be done, and you did it. It's not an easy burden to bear. Hang in there, don't beat yourself up about it and carry on. You did what needed to be done and you were with him in the end, like an old, old friend holding his paw into the light. And that's the best thing you could have done.

    Best,

    Geoff

    I love dogs. Specifically, the big ones. Alsatians and deerhounds and so forth.

    My mum's friend has this old female dog, I'm not sure what breed, she's a bit smaller than an alsatian, black and white, quite lupine looking. I love that dog, I always gotta kneel down and give her a hug when I see her.

    Agreed. You did the right thing. He had a good life, he's not suffering any more, that's what matters.
