Ok so I logged on the internet as usual like I have been for a long time and out of no where my home page goes to a ip address thingy like 88.233.232.233 anyways thats just an example. So this pages loads and say warning your computer is being monitored. You are under a violation blah blah blah and it even showed my IP address and all kinds of other information. And no this was not a pop up add or any banner or anything like that this was the real deal. I have no idea what violation I'm under but my computer is being monitored and I don't feel comfortable doing anything so I decided to come here and tell someone. So if anyone has any advice on this please post. I have no idea what to do.... should I contact the company? Should I contact a lawyer? Anyways some input fast would be great. Thanks.

Isn't there any identified party here?
Why would an unknown party inform you that your computer is being monitored.

You could try looking up the address to see where its located.

Whats the blah blah blah part...violation of what exactly?

The part that bothers me most is that your home page has been changed. The first thing I would do is a full virus scan.

Most likely it is just a peice of malware/spyware. These are capable of changing your homepage and likely got into your system when you installed something. They try to scare you into thinking you are being hacked or watched or whatever. The fact is, whatever site you go to knows your IP address. How do you think they can send the page to you?

I would agree with the virus scan as well as doing a scan for malware use programs such as AdAware, Spybot, etc.

Get a grip. I see these "warnings" all the time. It means nothing.

It is very easy to display your IP address.

If your homepage was changed, it would show up in HijackThis, which might also reveal the malware that changed it, because it might still be running.

I used to have a some sort of hijacked code in IE once. Any popular search engine you went to would come up like normal, but when you hit search it brought it up a bunch of "results" that were all ads. It was weird, too.

For example, with Google, all the results came back just like they always do (the style, the text preview and all). However all the results were just spam sites.

:) Hello Jesse. There's really nothing much to worry about here, you've just picked up a re-direct whilst surfing and it's jacked you're home page. Nothing to worry about, these "warnings" are just part of an ad scam jumpin' the b'jingo out of the unwary. Easy fix. Follow the following links, download, install and run the following:

Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html)

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html)

Keep them both up to date - they'll immunise your system from picking these things up as well as root out any other nasties you may have picked up along the way. Top notch stuff and all for absolutely no pennies whatsoever.

Hope that helps. Should do the trick.

A ;)

This is a trick that I used to see Evidence Eliminator use all the time. I don't know if it backfired on them badly or not, but I will never use EE because of those annoying and unnerving spam ads.

Go get'm Anonymous.

Your computer is not being monitored, but you sound very paranoid.

Make sure you have an up-to-date anti-spyware program and anti-virus program, use passwords that no one can easily figure out, and change them often. In other words, don't use passwords that resemble your address, phone number, date of birth, license plate, dog's name, etc. etc. If you have a good up-to-date anti-sypware program then it should pick up the source of a recurrent infiltration to your system as you are describing. In some cases the virus can attach to your harddrive and make it impossible to delete. In that case, you have to replace the harddrive. If you have a good anti-spyware and anti-virus program to begin with, this will not happen because it would be blocked, but there's hackers out there who are always coming up with new ones. Once I got hit with 41 spyware and viruses in one day and managed to block them all. I guess I should feel like I'm being monitored or watched?

your browsers homepage has been "highjacked".
the information about your IP. browser and OS is common information your computer sends to every website you visit.
go to the following website, register, then post in the maleware section.
be sure to follow all instructions.

Is Zonealarm any good?
not for this type of problem.
zone alarm is a firewall. it has two purposes.
first it keeps hackers from detecting your computer when doing random scans.
second it keeps adware from 'phoning home'.

Are you on broadband? Is your pc connected directly to the modem, or are you using a router with a firewall?

BTW-- this thread is probably more of a 'computer science and technology' question

I am. I have your IP. Check my post above.

BE AFRAID!! :eek:Actually, I have more than one IP, and free to monitor them all you want, if that's how you waste your time? but I'm sure you have no reason todo so, so why would I want to be "afraid" or feel paranoid? Whatever floats your boat.

Unless you are an al qaeda operative or on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, if you think someone is monitoring you, chances are that you have a psychological paranoi problem. Are you being stalked by someone you know? If so, why? If you think "yes," then do you have reason to believe that this person has sufficient enough computer expertise to monitor you in the way you are inferring? And why and to what end would they want to do this?

This is silly.

Valich. I think you missed the joke.

I have no idea what your IP is nor anyone elses. The IP I see in that post is mine. The IP you see is yours.

Check the site that the link (on the picture of your IP) refers to.

Only joking Absane. But still, any good hacker could go much farther than that. It's really easy to get an IP number. I hope you don't think that I was worried about it?

Paraniod Level 1
So you ar paranoid that someone is monitoring your computer and IP. Well theres nothing you can do other than doing spyware and virus scans and using a firewall program such as Zonealarm.
Paranoid Level 2
OK there is more you can do after setting up an active firewall goto shieldsup and check to make sure your computer is invisible on the net by doing a full port scan. Then reconfigure your FW to close the ports you have open. Now install pgp for outlook and invent a 512 or a 1024 key(also get all your friends onto pgp and give them your key, thats the hard part) if you are using such programs as outlook did you know that the message that you sent was sent in clear text with no encryption, anyone monitoring your internet traffic could pick it up.
Paranoid Level 3
Ok so your sitting behind your firewall with encrypted email, but do you feel safe someone could still send you a spoof email phishing for info, so now you set up a network of two or more honeypots a DMZ and bridged cisco firewall to hide behind.
One day you get a knock at the door from the intellegence service asking for alll your keys and also to take a dump off all your systems, why because our government/ your government doesnt like to be kept in the dark.

Bottom line, at anytime someone might be monitoring your computer, but if your not a terrorist, pedofile, criminal or about to commit treason theres no point in hiding anything past a simple firewall.

Tell me, do you dig into conspiracy theories? Do you support the anti-war movement?

It could be Big Brother 1984 doing its big dumb job.

Call your ISP, and tell them. They should have logs and could let you know what is taking place. As, this could be illegal, and they might want to know what their customers are going through.
