I see now that the entire debacle was my lack of perception. Good point.

    My bad.

    I'm sorry - for real.

    I'm an ass sometimes.

    That was one of them.

    Forgive me you bastards.

I was very very very very slow to see what you were doing. I didn't realize it was in code! (obvious and plain is too hard for me to see!)

    Point taken.

    I stand corrected.

I'll even write it on the board:

In the future, I will attempt to avoid miscommunication by paying more attention to context or at least putting up road signs or something.

I would ask that if I forget, someone throw me a frickin bone or you'll end up watching me make an ass out of myself. It's not pretty, but sometimes it IS kind of funny. Well to me at least. *shrug*

    He did

He did, Sargentlard. And quite obviously he's sincere in it. I'm actually hesitant in any reply because I did learn recently in a completely random PM exchange with another poster that I can still, with all sincerity of harmony in my heart, set people off.

But here we are, and so I put forth the following points:

    - The force of my tone is often what I consider matching hostility. It's where the jab that I'm being "accommodating" comes from.
    - The priority of the brawl arose at first from irritation at a perceived snub, and then from irritation at perceived dishonesty.
    - The hard stand on dishonesty was obviously severely affected by the priority I placed on the force of tone.

Were there better ways to handle it? Certainly there were less wasteful ways to handle it; such an error I openly acknowledge. Deferring to "accommodation of tone" is hardly useful, and while I do apologize in general to the forum for the huge disruption, I'm not going to lose sleep about it because it really does seem to be the preferred tone around here.

And to Wes ... I must stand firm on certian points, but I do confess to the overload of vicious tone and apologize for both enabling and directly contributing to an unnecessary escalation of hostility. No, Wes, you're probably not the liar I painted you to be; I refer back to the three points put forth above.

And someday I'll succeed in making the diatribe about priorities clear to people. First off, it's not a huge moral problem insofar as we're all human, and we all have some priorities askew. It only works effectively as a stinger because people choose to take it that way and respond to it that way. The reality is that objectively, every one of our priorities and principles are open to question.

The only thing I ask of anybody in all of this is that we as a community remember that our intelligence as individuals, while perfectly obvious to ourselves, is not necessarily clear to others. We choose to characterize others if they do not spell it out plainly; often we get insulted if people spell it out plainly because they seem patronizing. In the end, Wes and I both perceived disrespect where apparently none was intended, and that's how you end up with a barfight like that. (Okay, two posters determined to hash it out is also required, but that seems a given in this.)

Wes, I extend my official apology for exploiting a minor hitch in order to firestorm your character. It was an unnecessary use of an unnecessary degree of force.

so what? accommodating another's personality problems stemming from class/race/sex/etc should hardly be anyone else's problem.

if bogus issues are emphasized, deal with it. swiftly. harshly.

This is good to see. So many people on internet forums tend to hold grudges.

You have partially restored my faith in humanity, tiassa and Wes. Thankyou.

Mooboy, weren't you the one who said he had manboobs? Well I'm sure you don't need anyone to be feeling your love.

You can feel your own love by rubbing those manboobies of yours...
