The poor little chap is getting old and I'm worried about him. He doesn't seem to be able to open his eye at all at times and only a bit at other times. Should I take him to the vets?

He went once before when he got his leg trap in his cage and the vet wanted to chop his leg off or put him down. We said no to both and he went on to full recover. Seems the vet just wanted to kill him.

His nails have also grown very long should I cut them?

Just let nature take its course, you dont need to pay a Vet to kill your hamster for you.

nature dictates that you eat your hamster and while your at it, does your neighbor have a dog?

Try taking him to another vet. At least to see what's up.

His almost 2 1/2 now so he wont have long, I will give him some extra food, that still seems to cheer him up.

:) my lady's hamster lived nearly 4 years. we were amazed that the little thing was still hyper and happy up until the day it died.

4 years where you feeding him weat or something that's verry old for a hamster.
Small quantities of beer might help a little but proberly not for the hamster,
but seriosly try giving him small slices of apple (not the inner part) as long as it isn't beens onions and potato's most fruit and vegtebles are edible
