Can anyone here on SciForums help me out?

For some reason my computer/web browser is unable to fully load screens while surfing the internet. I will go to a site and it will begin loading and almost finish, but then just hang at the end. This results in parts of the page (links, graphics, text, etc.) not appearing or not fully appearing. I guess it's not totally unusable in the strictest sense of the word, but it's pretty close and I find it so annoying that it isn't worth trying to use it.

It started doing this a couple of weeks ago, which is why I haven't been posting lately - and I'm using my parents' computer to post this message. I have a subscription to a virus scan service and a full system scan tests clean and I am not having problems with any other programs. I don't think it's the ISP, since my parents' have the same ISP as I do, and their computer works just fine.

This is really pissing me off.

Hmmm, if you are sure that the problem doesn't come from the outside (the ISP, eg), checking your PC may not hurt. Maybe the net devices have some problem (and by net-device I don't confine to modems/LAN cards only, but also the phone cable). Or, by the way, compared to your parents' PC, how's your PC spec?

Have you installed a pop up killer? A fire wall? If so, shut them down and try again.

How are your privacy settings? Medium in Internet Explorer does the job. More could stop certain pages from loading. Even at medium level, some Sciforums elements are blocked (the paypal image

Run Lavasoft Adaware 6. Maybe your computer is full of junk.

    Run scandisk set to thoroughly.

Sound to me that your overall Packets are getting interrupted.

You might want to try a Connection tweak program (one that adjusts the size of your packets etc) in doing so it will optimise your connection and make sure that you haven't accidentally screwed your connections packet profile. (The info that tells the modem what size packets should be sent at)

Another thing you might want to check is that your not surfing via proxy. Proxies tend to slowdown peoples surfing if they are overloaded, and if someones snuck a proxy setting into your computer then it's bound to be an overloaded proxy.

One last thing, which might fix the prob. Re-install your modem drivers (namely uninstall then reinstall them) this might fix your problem.

    Galt,

A4Ever's suggestions seem very reasonable to me. If, however, his/her course of action is not working, then I would try to reinstalling/upgrading the browser. Assuming you are using a Windows O.S., this is usually done by downloading an installer from Microsoft.

In your case however, you might want to check your "Control Panel->Add Remove programs" and check whether you see something like "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1" and either choose "Repair" or "Return to previous configuration".

I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice.

My piece of crap computer still isn't working - or my piece of crap web browser, anyway - and once again I have stopped by my parents house to post this message. I will try to address everyone's points in this post.

My computer is comparable to my parents'; same brand and everything. The only difference is the operating system: they are running Windows XP and I have Windows ME. Oddly enough, until I started having this problem, my computer was much faster on the internet than my parents'.

I do have a firewall, but have had one for several years and have not had this problem until recently.

    I don't have a pop-up blocker.

My web security settings have been set to medium for a couple of years and I've never had any problems.

I don't know how to change the size of my packets or find out if someone has put a proxy setting in my computer without me knowing.

I have reached the point where the only approach I haven't tried is reinstalling stuff. If that doesn't work I'm buying a damn Macintosh.

I miss posting here at SciForums, but I have been spending a lot of time reading and playing video games. Who knew that Atlas Shrugged was better the third time that it was the second?

Have you cleared your browsers cache lately, or ever?
I'm not familiar with ME, but it should be the same as 98, 2000, and XP. Go to My Computer, Control Panel, Internet Options, General tab, click the Delete box on Temporary Internet Files.

As I said, I've never used ME, but it is legendary for being the worst OS Microsoft ever produced.

Upgrading to Windows XP would be a major improvement. Newegg.com has the upgrade for $81.00, or Home full install for $91.00. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=Microsoft%2CWindows%2CXP%2CHome%2CEdition
You'll have to cut and paste, letting this software parse it results in a dead URL.
I'd spend the extra ten dollars for the standard version, rather than the upgrade.

It'll be like a different computer. In a good way.
