Passengers explain pair's removal

The plane flew on to Manchester without the men

Passengers on a Manchester-bound flight have described how two men were removed from the plane because other travellers thought they were speaking Arabic.

Heath Schofield, a passenger on the flight from Malaga, described it as being a "bit like Chinese whispers".

Monarch Airlines said passengers had demanded the men were removed because they were acting suspiciously.

Birmingham MP Khalid Mahmood said it was disgraceful the pair seemed to have been judged on their skin colour.

The men - reported to be of Asian or Middle Eastern appearance - were taken from Wednesday's flight ZB 613 and questioned but were allowed to fly back to the UK later in the week.

Refusal to board

Mr Schofield, who was travelling with his wife Jo and their children, said: "We all started boarding the flight.

Heath and Jo Schofield were on the Manchester flight

"Our daughter noticed a couple of guys that were perhaps acting a bit strange. They went to the front of the queue, went to the back of the queue, and then they went and sat down by themselves.

"Anyway, we got on the plane and we boarded and it became apparent after we were already supposed to be flying that several of the passengers had refused to board the craft.

"A few rumours went round, it was a little bit like Chinese whispers, and then some more people decided they were getting off."

Plane finally took off

He said Spanish police officers came on to the plane and took the two men's passports and 20 minutes later the pair were removed from the plane.

All the passengers were then taken off and the plane and all the luggage was swept for explosives. Three hours later the passengers boarded again and the plane took off without the pair.

We can't have a situation where one passenger decides that another passenger isn't going to fly

David Reynolds
British Airline Pilots Association

His wife said: "We still don't know what was said, or whether it was anything to be alarmed about."

She said: "A lot of mums were trying to calm the children down - they were getting quite panicky because of what they'd seen on the telly.

"It became apparent that the reason that some of the people didn't board the plane was because somebody had overheard the gentlemen in question speaking - I think it was Arabic."

'Tight procedures'

Mr Mahmood said it was "absolutely disgraceful" that passengers had taken it on themselves to label people.

"That is not what we want. The colour of your skin shouldn't identify what you are. It is a sad state of affairs that that has happened."

He called for air passengers to understand that once people were allowed through security "they should be OK".

David Reynolds, from the British Airline Pilots Association, said there were "very tight procedures" in place to ensure only the "right sort of people" boarded flights.

"Clearly, we can't have a situation where one passenger decides that another passenger isn't going to fly," he said.

Is this the future of airline travel?
Where passengers get to pick & choose who they fly with?
Is it racism or self preservation?

We have kids crying here & afraid & saying daddy, mummy i dont want to fly with that man with a beard & hat.

Are we pampering to the kids here?
Is that man with a beard & a hat a bogey man type figure to these kids?
And what will happen to these kids when they grow up, if there afraid of muslims now, what are they going to think of them in 15 years time?

The police in spain reacted to the mutiny of the passengers here, by doing so they admit that they too are concerned about muslims flying, are they right to be concerned?

or would you be more concerned sitting next to a nun on a plane than a muslim cleric with a beard?

I'm not disagreeing with him, but Mr Mahmood might have some kind of personal issue with this. I've never met a white Mr Mahmood.

It is a shambles though. Cheap package holiday in the Costa del Sol, flying with Monarch. Been there, done that. I was more worried about the pissed up Mancunians on the flight than any kind of terrorist activity.

I too have never met a white Mr Mahmood before, i am puzzled why he is bringing the racial colour issue into this, its seems to me this is not about another passengers colour of skin here, its about there language arabic & there religous beliefs, thats according to what the passengers said, & its about kids being afraid of them, i dont know about you, but when kids are crying or are afraid to fly with muslims there is something going on here, kids take very little of world news in, but what they are taking in it seems is a big fear of muslims, & that does not look good for the future because in 15 or 20 years time, all these kids are going to hate & fear muslims.

I see, so now instead of just banning Arabs from flying, we're gonna want to ban Asians too? Ridiculous. You guys are a bunch of scared, overreacting pansies. Yes, the terrorists have won. Let's just have only white people flying now.

Sieg heil, mein Fuhrer, Busche!

Neildo where have i called for muslims to banned from flying here, i merely voiced the concerns of the passengers here, the children who said mummy, daddy i dont want to fly with these people with a beard.

Asians is a wrong description as orientals get lumped into that description too, lets call them a offshoot of the arabs, abit like the romulians are a offshoot of the vulcans.

Neildo we must not let our children fly in a state of fear & anxiety, what next zanax for the kids on the plane, we should listen to there legitamate concerns about beaded passengers, we also have many adults here who also refused to fly with the muslim passengers.

neildo how woulld you define a entire plane full of uk families who refuse to fly with muslims, are they all a bunch of neo nazi racists?

Or neildo do you feel there views represent the views of all passengers flying these days?

Neildo what do you think of passengers doing there own religous profiling of fellow passengers, do you feel that is warranted in todays love in world, do you feel you should answer questions on your religous beliefs into a lie detector at say airports in the future?

Sorry, I was referring to another thread in this section that was about banning Muslims from flying, heh.

No, I would classify them as scared because you know, the terrorists have won, otherwise they wouldn't be so scared jumping at every little thing. Those that would want to ban Muslims and Asians entirely, would be racist tho, yes.

Neildo what do you think of passengers doing there own religous profiling of fellow passengers, do you feel that is warranted in todays love in world, do you feel you should answer questions on your religous beliefs into a lie detector at say airports in the future?

I've no problem with racial or religious profiling for the safety of our passengers. Go ahead and double check them before they board the plane. However, once on board, when you still have people refusing to even fly with a Muslim, that's when it's sad and out of control.

However, it's pretty useless as you need not be a Muslim to blow up a plane. There's lots of people disgruntled about the U.S. that wouldn't mind doing so which Muslim extremists can just pay the people to aid in their cause. Gangbangers down here in Cali already do as it's a mutually beneficial thing that aids in their Aztlan conquest. Quite a few have been arrested and detained. Are we gonna now ban Mexicans from flying too? With everyone hating us, surely we're the problem, not them, but hey, we're never wrong, eh?
