Malaysia's Government has accused its religious schools of teaching hate, not religion, and has stopped their state subsidy.

More than 125,000 children in Malaysia receive an Islamic education in such institutions.


Are religious schools breeding young militants?

Education Minister Musa Mohamad has said the schools could stoke Islamic extremism.

"There is enough evidence for us to believe that the private religious schools have the tendency to promote teaching in religious doctrines rather than in religious education, a doctrine that may not be acceptable to a government that is practising democracy," he said.

The Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has gone further, accusing them of teaching hate.

Indeed, some of the alleged Islamic militants recently arrested in Malaysia have been linked to such schools.

The government has stopped giving any subsidy, and urged parents to send children elsewhere.

But are these schools, also known as madrasas, a hotbed of militants?

The recent conviction of radical Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir has brought the country's Muslim boarding schools, or pesantren, into the spotlight.

Ba'asyir's school in central Java is alleged to have taught many of the suspected perpetrators of last year's bombing in Bali.

A respected think tank, the International Crisis Group, says a small group of pesantren have been teaching a hardline message of jihad, or holy war, and they have become an easy recruiting ground for the extremist group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) which is widely believed to have been behind the Bali bombings.

Pakistan has been under pressure to crackdown on the schools which are viewed as training grounds for Islamic militants.

Foreign governments, especially those from the Middle East, are known to be unhappy about their nationals, usually Islamic dissidents, attending madrassas in Pakistan.

There is also concern about the future of about 1.5m graduates to be produced by these madrassas.

"Their constrained world view, lack of modern civic education, and poverty make them a destabilising society," according to the report.

They are also susceptible to "romantic notions of sectarian and international jihadis with a promise of instant salvation".

Nearly 10,000 madrassas are reported to be operating in Pakistan, but they have never faced any regulation.


But the International Crisis Group said the military government's confrontation with its former religious allies is "at best a short-term response compelled by circumstances and foreign pressure".


In many rural areas, the madrassas provide the only real chance of any education.

They attract the poor because they are free and provide children with board and lodgings.

Many of the Taleban, who lived in Pakistan as refugees, received their education in the schools, and Pakistan's own extremists have attended them.
