View Full Version : Movie: Signs (Read if you have not seen it)
goofyfish 01-09-03, 01:17 PM Terrible flick. Save your money.
The plot is illogical, the dialogue is awful, the acting is terrible and, personally, I doubt that they intended as many laughs as they got. Also, I take exception to "thoughtful," as in, "It's a thoughtful commentary on inner faith." All the film showed was that Mel had lost his, and it was just one of the many clichéd plot points that all were pasted together - indeed, with absolutely no sign of epiphany.
IMHO
:m: Peace.
notme2000 01-10-03, 01:27 AM I'm assuming this thread is a spin on mine, so you know that I thought the movie was crap. Totally predictable, silly, and just plain dumb. Aliens and god don't mix. Stupid movie, I CAN'T believe it's doing so well.
They captured the boring bland quality of kansas cornfields perfectly. The mumbled dialog was entrancing. My little boys were were asleep in no time.
pumpkinsaren'torange 01-11-03, 11:28 AM dumb. i wish i would have saved my money. the whole movie was monotonous..and, i laughed louder...ok, sniggered louder than i actually should have at the appearance of the alien, while i was sitting in the theatre.
Pollux V 01-11-03, 12:41 PM I hate to contradict every living soul on earth that has seen this movie (which I concede, must be terrible) but I rather enjoyed Signs. My friends who have seen it hated it, in fact Cactus Jack and I engaged in random shouting contests about the film whenever we found ourselves on a crowded bus with people we didn't know.
Even those of you that hate it, you have to look at the (hopefully universal) good points of the movie.
-Although he wasn't great, Joquin Phoenix (wrongly spelt name) gave one of the best performances I've ever seen on film in Gladiator. On the extras of that dvd there's a scene that they cut out for NO REASON--in fact Ridly Scott had no idea why he had done it--where Commodus approaches his father's statue-head, whips out a sword and hacks it to pieces. He then starts crying and hugs it. Any movie with this man in it, no matter the role, from now on I will see.
-The camera angles were nice.
-The first time you really see an alien, in central america, the director gave you enough time to know that the thing was coming, and then you could see it only for long enough to wet your pants and scream at the same time.
-Although your experience may be different, just as the movie began these sugar-high girls walked into the front of the theatre and screamed at the openining scene, where Mel appears suddenly in front of the camera or something. It was really funny...
-Until I started thinking about the end, I loved it. But I agree, it was largely incomplete. I think the theme of the movie was melding old-scifi to modern movie styles, but if this were true then we would have seen more action, even on the news. I don't feel it's possible to have an alien-terrorizes-secluded-farming-family without more action then what was in Signs.
pumpkinsaren'torange 01-11-03, 01:10 PM ok. i must admit the photgraphy in that movie was pretty good. and, that Phoenix guy's acting was (as well as Mculkin's) was pretty good, too. but, i think Mel Gibson is highly over-rated.
man, *looks at my post* i need to learn how to put a sentence together today. spell, too.:D
"I think the theme of the movie was melding old-scifi to modern movie styles"
I don't think this was the theme of the movie, exactly, just a delightful part. The movie all together was somewhat poor. I don't think it quite deserves the criticism it's receiving, but it was not exceptional by any means. I rather loved the attempt to visualize an alien and the Hitchkock-inspired directing.
CounslerCoffee 01-12-03, 07:48 PM I liked this movie. I think that it shows what the modern (Normal) man would go through during an alien invasion. Oh and the water thing... Yeah that just sucked butt.

I think the ending was a tangent of the "War of the Worlds" ending, were bacteria do the evil aliens in, here in "Signs" anguished priests sprinkle 'holy water' on these demons & it kills them. Like salt to a snail? We earthlings need 'weapons' on our side.
Coldrake 01-20-03, 05:07 PM Juaquin Phoenix is great. Loved him in U-Turn and Clay Pigeons.
