View Full Version : Most valued member
Some one recently indicated to me that being considered a valued member of sciforums was important to them; it made them feel good.
The term used was "respect".
So how many of the posters here attach importance to their "image" at sciforums?
Do they cultivate this image carefully and aspire to be appreciated for it?
Does the opinion of the "senior" or "popular" members mean a lot to them?
The poll is anonymous.;)
francois 09-02-07, 06:41 PM That's fine. That person you speak of is ahead in the game.
I personally don't care about what anybody thinks about about me. In real life or on the Internet. It's all the same.
I'd be surprised if you, SAM, don't care about how people think of you at this place. You, no doubt, spend a lot of time here. You must care quite a bit. But I could be wrong.
So how many of the posters here attach importance to their "image" at sciforums?
It's important to me how I'm seen by certain SFers.
(Strangely, those whose opinion I respect :D)
Do they cultivate this image carefully and aspire to be appreciated for it?
Nope, not cultivated.
Don't aspire.
I present myself as I see myself.
Does the opinion of the "senior" or "popular" members mean a lot to them?
Popular? Senior?
Neither qua popular or senior, although some of those whose posts I read avidly are one or the other or both, some are probably neither.
Who is popular?
With which "group" of SFers?
Meh, as many factions as there are posters.
The poll is anonymous.;)
I might have just blown my anonymity, Saiyyadati. :D

People frequently mistake my curiosity for personal interest.
I've given up disabusing the notion.
I'm curious, do I come across in my posts as someone who must care for the opinion of others?

Heh, I already know all about you Oli; I'm engaging in my usual self indulgence.

ALL?
I thought (hoped) I was deeper than that. :bawl:

I'm divided. On the one hand, its just a forum; so no jusqu'à la mort where discussion is concerned. On the other, I have grown to appreciate some people here, so even though I offer my opinions on a sort of sounding board, I do look for their opinions as I have learned a lot about myself from them (even the ones who disagree with me).
cosmictraveler 09-02-07, 06:58 PM My penis is my most valued member and I want you to remember that too! :p

Tadaaa, if you didn't care you wouldn't post.
francois 09-02-07, 07:07 PM I'm curious, do I come across in my posts as someone who must care for the opinion of others?
I only guessed that you care because you spend a shitload of time here. You've made a shitload of posts here. I don't see how a person with a finite amount of worktime who spent as much time here as you could not care quite a bit. If you didn't care, frankly, I would find that strange. I doubt I'm alone in thinking this to be the case.
Nope, there's a difference between caring about the opinions of other posters and caring about the post contents...
You can learn from the content whether you're bothered about the originator's opinion of yourself or not.
Tadaaa, if you didn't care you wouldn't post.
I care about the issues, of course. I'm very passionate about my beliefs.
But I also look at things with an academic curiosity.
And I tend to pedantic behaviour to the point of boredom (enough already!!!) :D

Care about what, exactly?
Hmm so far 8 votes have been cast and only one person admits to caring about the opinion of others.
James R 09-02-07, 09:48 PM SAM:
There's a difference between caring what members in general think of you and caring about what popular members think of you. Who says being popular makes you a figure worthy of respect?
So how many of the posters here attach importance to their "image" at sciforums?
None. I'm only here to pass the time and maybe learn something in the process; impressing people is not important.
Do they cultivate this image carefully and aspire to be appreciated for it?
Nope. If you don't agree with me, fuck you (not you, SAM: just in general).
Does the opinion of the "senior" or "popular" members mean a lot to them?
No, "seniors" or "popular" members are equally unimportant to me. The only members whose opinions I respect are those who are intelligent and on my side of the fence. I don't respect opinions which are wrong.
superluminal 09-02-07, 10:23 PM Let's just cut to the chase and have another "who's the bestest poster" and get on with the mutual masturbation.
francois 09-02-07, 10:26 PM Care about what, exactly?
don't be obnoxious.... care about what others think.

You cold hearted bastard. Why don't you care? After all that time we spent together? What about Paris? Don't you remember Paris? I don't know what I ever saw in you...
Wait. What were we talking about?
I see S.A.M. is dipping her big toe again into a train of thought not of her musing (but she can argue herself out of anything, I'd image). Hence a rather chaste perception about "image"—culminating into a… a crowd-pleaser/displeaser? Really.
For some the value is not at all about showing-off one's "creativity" and popularizing it, but rather, the challenge to persevere and sustain it.

Ah my bad, could you change it to just members in the poll options?

And you perceive my own values to be otherwise because I choose to question them? :bawl:
So far, no one cares what the (popular, should have said regular) members think of them.

I only frequent this forums in the hope that SAM flashes her boobs again. Since I missed it the first time.
I do consider it a failure if I gain respect with certain members since this would indicate I have turned into Adolf Hitler crossed with Joseph Mengele and G W Bush. Maybe with a slight essence of Jesus.

The boobs were never as good in reality as they have become in theory (or history).
Also, you might overthrow the dictator of East Korea if you gain the respect of a sufficient number of members.

I am reading the history of Mao and it is obvious from this historical reflection that you do not need the respect or popularity to become top dog. In fact Mao was generally seen as an asshole only out for personal gain by the people surrounding him. His attitude actually reminds me of many of the posters here on sciforums of the republican persuasion.
'Power comes from the barrel of the gun'.
No, that wasn't said by Charles Heston.
I serve the Great Leader GeoffP and work for him to get him to the top google spot. I bask in His shadow of enlightment.
Using Jessica Alba's nipples is cheating.
spuriousmonkey 09-03-07, 01:36 AM I see that you are a sly Trotskyist intent on Mocking the Great Doctrine of The Great Leader Who has brought us Great Happiness with His Guidance.
I can only wish to be able to communicate a fraction of the Wisdom of the Great Leader, asking for more would be impossible. I am humble and pure. In service of the Great Leader.
Who are the popular members on this forum?
