How can we put more science into sciforums?

    any thoughts?

I would think that we might need more scientists, but the danger is that then the discussion might become to esoteric for the average, or beginning sciforumer...So that might not be the solution.

Or is it that it is great the way it is now?

No it isn't great the way it is now. There are too many threads on "realtionship problems"...you got problems? go to a threrapist....don't divulge your life history here.....there are too many bulshit threads that are pointless. But the biggest problem is the clashing of egos. Name one good thread that remained that way for the entirty of it's lifetime?...can't think of one..didn't think so because every good topic turns into a war of words between two or three people and the rest just end up not giving a damn....you wanna duke it out..PM EACH OTHER OR GO TO THE CHAT ROOM.

We don't need more scientists but more levelheaded people that can keep their cool....people like WET1, Xenu, airavata.....among others..people who don't talk out of their asses but rather try to win using actual info. There are already many intelligent people here but most of them are ego driven crazies.

Seriously i don't know Porfiry can stand this forum any more

sorry about this (cuz I am slightly drunk), but is is so cure that you think info can win an argument...

in science we have data...and we have interpretations of that data...and there is no direct correlation between the two..

I was not reffering to that.....i did not imply they win the argument i said they use it instead of other douchebags here that procalim themselves intellectuals and fart out pointless banter. Those users i named above atleast go at it with a scientific POV among others unlike many you might have also noticed here.

I wonder why more big-time scientists don't use things like this. I suppose they write books and stuff and this would be a waste of time due to the fact they wouldn't get paid.
But I think I would still come here if I somehow became a real scientist. Its a good tool, I think it would be educational for even the most educated individuals, even if only on an observing human nature level.
I could never get into the cold hard science discussions because I practically have no formal education but I would love for more real scientists to be here to dissect my simple views.

I'm sorry to say this Fredx, but obviously you lack the ability to judge their scientific content if you can make this statement.

as an example in the biology forum...what keeps the people occupied?

    'Here comes the POX'

    'cyborgs'

    'The Evolution of Our Soles'

    'Poll: Human Genetic Engineering'

    'animal experimention - mistreating animals'

these are the top 5 threads at the moment...and no...none of them are really top notch science (although the evolution of our soles almost comes close).
The most popular thread is one I started myself on animal experimentation, and I knew of course it would be popular, because everybody has an opinion on this matter. But is it a scientic discussion?

I sometimes start some threads that try to go slightly deeper, but they never really take off. But that is ok, I still have fun doing them and sometimes I use ideas for other purposes.

it would be nice to inject more science into the forums. but it's still better to talk to science minded people about nothing in particular than to go to the billions of music forums and talk to those knuckleheads.

One of hte problems with wanting more sicence, is htat due to its inherent specialisation, its very hard to have a decently scientific discussion involving people. i could talk about the vagaries of ceramics or analytical chemistry with some of you, but since most of you likely wouldnt know what Im talking about, then it would be a waste of time. Plus of course im fairly young and therefore dont have a massive fund of knowledge and experience to fall back on.

AS for using actual info, thats one thing I have noticed here, compared to my last forum, is the lack of info and quotes etc. Last place I was at, there were some hot shot arguers who had time to put together annoying debates etc, which had me digging for information. here, we all content ourselves with a bit of slagging off. Serioulsy, does anyone here take more than a slight interest in many subjects? Unfortunately that takes time, and a bit of effort, hell, Im not as well informed as I would like to be, although I amgetting there slowly.

As for looking at things scientifically, its a useful tool, but only a tool, remember that.

Big time scientists will be more focused and therefore pick and choose what they look at, and are probably signed up for those specific newsgroups type things, so only get their own subjects.
