This explains volumes as I always wondered how the corporate American media got those high poll numbers in support of their puppet governments.

legalizing MJ would take care of 25% of these problems...but pharma makes no money with that

And how do you know that? Where are your facts to back your statement up or is it only your "guess" as to what you think?

Mental illnesses cannot be "helped" by smoking pot. Where do you come up with your BS? Show me some scientific data that pot can cure mental illness. I'm thankful that I'm taking my medications for I'm Bi-Polar and suffer from depression as well. Without my meds I'm suicidal and not a very happy camper feeling very elated at times and very low at others. Lithium and Welbutrin are what I'm on and pot could never achieve what they have done to help me overcome my problems.

Some of them can, for some people. Even prescription meds don't work for everyone, they need to be tailored to the individual. My friend uses pot to help with schizotypal personality disorder, it works for him.

    The broader issue

The broader issue suggests three primary possibilities:

    • A genuine increase in mental illness.
    • Improved diagnostic procedures regarding mental illness.
    • Lackadaisical treatment of the appearance of social and personal dysfunction.

Personally, I think it's some of each:

    • Evolving societal demands are increasing psychological conflicts.
    • Improved mental health care is detecting a greater portion of psychological dysfunction.
    • Pharmaceutical companies make a lot of money from psych drugs.

On that second point specifically, we may eventually have to come together as a society and discuss our ideas of normalcy. After all, if the statistical norm suffers great enough deviation, we need to re-evaluate the baseline. Perhaps we are simply asking the wrong questions, so to speak. Or, maybe, the lunatics are running the asylum.

Additionally, I would note that the Reuters article focuses in part on the increase in the 65+ population. In 1996, the latest birth date was 1931. Today, that's 1944. Improved medical technology has increased lifespan, and thus the number of people living past 65. As we're about to see the Boomers enter this category, we can expect the number of 65+ psych patients to skyrocket.

Wow. You sure are a arrogant little child. How about you worry about your own problems instead of making up some for other people.

What I am saying is, GROW UP
