If you had one million US dollars and had only two options, keep it or donate it all to charity, what would you do?

(Sorry, I know I'm posting this very late. It was a long, busy day for me).

firstly, lol at your backwards american dating. secondly, would we be unable to spend the money on anything at all charitable? would we be able to share the things we bought for ourselves? you could buy things for the community, or start a business which supports your local community etc.

No, if you keep it you cannot use any of it for charity or charitable. Yes, you would be able to share the things you buy for yourselves. No. All of the money has to either be saved or spent on yourself (not on the community) if you choose not to donate it. And yes, you can start a business with it.

Couldn't you split the money down the middle, half for the charity of your choice and keep the rest? If not I would put it into a bank account for when my kids are older.

Keep it, I would rather help people myself the way I wanted to than outsource it.

Give it to charity of course, it's no good to me.
They don't accept dollars in the shops round here.

Probably keep it and spend it on start-ups/ support for small businesses, stuff like that. (Apart from my long-promised-to-myself summer vacation in Prague, but that'd be a drop in the ocean cost wise).

    Keep it for what?

Money kept is useless. You have to spend it or give it away for it to be any use. It seems giving some of it to charity is not allowed. Are other uses not allowed? For example, what if I wanted to donate some of it to Greenpeace, say? Would that be allowed?

I wouldn't even consider giving it all to charity. I certainly might give some portion, maybe even 10% to my church. But if it's all or nothing, I'm kieeping it all.

    I keep it.
I agree with madant. I would give a lot, but the all or nothing is not acceptable to me at this stage in my life.
In about 30 yrs I probably would have no problem giving it all away

Keep it and make more with it, then you can give some to charitable causes.
