View Full Version : Missing Windows ME dll
StrayDogStrut 12-04-04, 04:19 PM Sorry for posting a slue of computer questions while not posting anything else, but such is the nature of having old computers, I guess.
I have Verizon DSL and we have a wireless LAN. Currently, the main computer that is connected to the router is connected to the internet. However, my computer is not. I have one of the PCI cards for the wireless internet. The configuration utility I have for linksys tells me that I am connected to the network, but I still can't get to the internet. I had a similar problem in the past, so we took the computer in and they were stumped for awhile, but eventually realized that some company issued out a notice that computers using Windows ME may be lacking a necessary dll file. They installed it, and then it worked.
When I try to ping google or yahoo, it always times out. When I am not at all connected to the network and I try to use mozilla to get somewhere, it says Requesting host address, or something to that effect. When it is in this state, it stays in perpetual "Connecting to _______." Does anyone know what dll that was? Or does anyone know any other possible fix? Thank you very much
Aborted_Fetus 12-04-04, 08:48 PM hahaha
Well, my friend, welcome to Windows Me. Quite possibly the worst version of Windows in existence. Seriously, I would recommend not even trying to fix this problem, and reformatting with Windows 98 (or XP depending on the speed of your machine). If you fix this problem, you will almost certainly get another problem just like it. Windows ME is a HORRIBLE operating system.
Ronhrin 12-09-04, 05:46 PM Windows ME?
*argh
you must life in a horror movie, only there would it be possible to run Windows ME
haven't you realize that your OS is an egocentric son of the b*?
it only thinks about itself, he can only think about "ME!", lol
my humor level is dangerously affected ain't it?
now seriously if you want Windows then you have to install XP SP2
most stable microsoft OS so far, regarding off course MS-DOS, lol
but Windows ME is the worst thing I've ever seen
Win 98 1st edition is worse than WinMe
at least from my experience
Win 98 2nd Editon however is better
mercurio 12-10-04, 07:32 AM There's several possibilities here (but do get rid of ME, indeed - get either Win98SE or XP). Sounds like a DNS problem.
The file you installed earlier was probably SHDOCLC.DLL?
You might not need to install it separately: here's what to do to make sure it's all there:
To resolve, you will need a Win Me CD or have cab files on hard disk.
1. Go to Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup then click on Communications and select Details radio button. Uncheck Dial Up Networking.
2. Run Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services Right click on Winsock and Winsock2 and delete them.
3. Reboot computer.
4. Reinstall Dial Up Networking using same procedure as in step 1 except check box by Dial Up Networking. Follow prompts from there.
This procedure will remove and reinstall DNS.
What you might also want to check is the TCP/IP setting in the network properties for the LAN card in the machine with the problem, and check the settings behind the DNS tab, and if empty enter the IP of the machine with the actual internet connection, so it uses that one to look up the DNS's of your browser requests...
Red Devil 12-13-04, 10:36 PM Before I went XP Pro; then Sp1 then Sp 2, I ran Me and never had any problems, strange init??
StrayDogStrut 12-14-04, 06:25 PM I tried going through those steps to delete winsock2, but I didn't mess with winsock. Is it necessary? I did it thinking it was probably what was done earlier to fix the problem, but I think it unlikely that the computer would revert to an original state without me doing anything. The only thing that changed right at the time that it stopped working was that the computer directly connected to the router had its BIOS updated. It's an old computer with a pentium II processor and some old chipset that I'd have to look up. I don't think that that would have anything to do with it either. I'm still rather stumped
Red Devil 12-14-04, 08:45 PM I cannot see it here but what about going to that site that has all the dll's you need, all there, ready to download. I just cannot recall the url!!
StrayDogStrut 01-16-05, 05:04 PM Some time has gone by and I have deduced that it is not that same missing dll. I believe I figured it out and it just isn't that issue anymore. I got a NIC card and installed that, but even when wired directly to the router, I can't connect. The computer connected to the router runs windows 98 and is an old pentium II machine. The point at which everything stopped working was when that computer upgraded its BIOS to the most recent version. I can't imagine that there is a BIOS setting that would not allow me to connect to the internet through there, but there has to be something.
The reason I think there is is because I think one of my neighbors recently installed a wireless network. From my computer, in the wireless utility site survey, I can see the weak signal and I once connected to it and successfully reached the internet. I really think it must be the computer connected to the router, but I don't know. Are there any ideas?
Red Devil 01-17-05, 02:12 PM I used to have loads of problems with a Belkin Router which had to be manually "installed" at my ISP and trouble connecting other pcs made it virtually redundant. Something bust in it and I had to buy a new one, and went for the Trust 350R Broadband Router. Superb. Everything is automatically configured, even my daughters very troublesome laptop, a PIII - YES!!
