I have just gotten onto this genre, with such artists as:
Matmos
Aphex Twin
Boards of Canada
Mum
Autechere
The music these people are making- a spliced togther, unique, biological fusion of white noise and rhythm, is intriguing and oddly passionate, but I wonder if music made entirely within a studio with no clear message other than the rhythm has enough soul to be considered anything other than purely mathematical?

I have never heard of it. I don't even know what it sounds like.

Is the Aphex Twin considered to be minimalistic techno??

Or are you listening to that selected ambient works?

If so, try Come to daddy! :D

A4Ever,

The only Aphex Twin album I own myself is druKqs, seeing as it was the only one I could find. I have heard some of the ambient works, though, and because AB 85-92 is really their defining work, I think we can safely say that they fit in the minimlist genre.

Also, I was under the impression that the Richard D. James album was one of the best...I have not heard of Come to Daddy.

Thank you!

Hold those horses! :) :)

Aphex Twin is one guy, and an ugly one. :)

The Richard D James album has synths like the ones on the soundtrack of Zelda with nervous techno on top of it. Bit drum and bass.

The single for Girl/Boy has some hard stuff on it.

Windowlicker is softer

But then the Come to daddy EP: try that one! Industrial drum and bass, distorted synth or guitar or whatever the twisted fudge thought of :)

I would never call his work minimalistic as a generalisation.

The ambient works aren't his main doing. The first album was a revelation, the second was supposedly a joke on the ambient community.

So I wouldn't call the ambient work his defining albums.

With some searching, you can find the SUPERCOOL video for come to daddy.

If you don't like searching, go to this adress, right click and save it :) :) :)

(I don't think just clicking it will work)
