In my ceramics class, we were talking about how different styles of art speak to different people. For example, Picasso's Cubism will be seen by some as a great example of all that art should be, but others will think that its shite. I personaly found myself drawn to minimalism. Does anyonw know anything about it, or any good websites for a history of it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

minimalism is crazy stuff. I respect it, but can't stand to listen or preform it. But if that does it for you, immerse yourself into it. Listen to as much as you can.

well, i was reffering more to the art/sculpture style than the music. Everyone knows my music of choice is punk rock. ;)

Some here (http://www.artincontext.com/listings/artist/genre/minimal.htm)
Rhys Chatham comes to mind. "Guitar Trio" is a minimalist experiment, and Band of Susans does a ripping cover of it.
Fictional artist Rabo Karabekian (Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; see Breakfast of Champions) provides an interesting reflection on minimalism.
Donald Judd, "Untitled" (Hirschhorn Gardens) (http://hirshhorn.si.edu/collection/record.asp?Artist=Judd%20Donald&hasImage=1&ViewMode=&Record=1)
Ellsworth Kelly, "Yellow with Red Triangle" (Corcoran Gallery) (http://www.corcoran.org/collection/highlights_main_results.asp?ID=5)
I'm more along the thought of minimalism is something I would call "essentialism", but I need a different word for it (there probably is one). Much like the fictional Karabekian, minimalism should chase after the essence of what is represented. However, I'm also aware that some consider minimalism to be simply that: a minimal arrangement of form, a natural regard for shape, object, and texture. A field of green with a strip of day-glo orange tape can speak as many volumes as Heironymous Bosch. Of course, a piece of pipe and a box ... well, that can speak volumes, too.
But I swear Rhys Chatham's "Guitar Trio" will help explain my take on minimalism.
(Note: The South Park Christmas episode featuring Mr. Hanky and the "music of New York minimalist composer Phillip Glass", while supposedly satiring minimalism, or, at least, Mr. Glass, actually came up with a segment that is not wholly unattractive. "Hover hover hover ....") ;)
