I like metal music. However, most metal music is brick stupid. I wanted to put together a list of intelligent metal music for people who are not familiar with the genre, so they aren't left thinking the entire group is as dumb as, say, Pantera.

    1. Slayer - South of Heaven: one of the first truly apocalyptic works of music to emerge from America, this album explores the ways and means of our eventual collapse.

    2. Prong - Beg to Differ: a strong statement of social independence, BTD is an album about a lack of standards compliance with a system that has lost its own authenticity.

    3. Voivod - Dimension Hatross: progressive speed metal with a futuristic and cyberpunk touch, Voivod makes an album entirely from raw creativity, fusing a new style of dissonant chording, offtime lead rhythm playing, and bizarre song structures.

    4. Morbid Angel - Blessed Are the Sick: this album is so subtly musical that often it takes several listens to realize where its sleight of hand technicality manifests itself, but what is most impressive is that it does so without losing intensity at all.

    5. Incantation - Onward to Golgotha: sounding like a demon emerging from hell, this visceral masterpiece of onslaught nevertheless features classically-inspired song structures and eternally monumental riffing.

    6. Demilich - Nespithe: described by many as the weirdest metal album ever, this jazzy uptemp CD features a cryptogram of lyrics, left field melanges of themes expressed in riff, and some of the most unique and soulful soloing in popular music.

    7. Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss: a fusion of ambient music and ultra-simple metal, this album evokes the spirit of dark woods, predators and warriors, and the values of an ancient era.

    8. Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse: the word "majestic" begins to describe this masterpiece, in which an interleaving of keyboards and soaring guitars produces cavalcades of noise harmonized into melody.

    9. Gorgoroth - Antichrist: done in a satire of 1920s cinema, "Antichrist" mocks all of our fears of evil in intricately compact melodic constructions.

    10. Averse Sefira - Tetragrammatical Astygmata: wondering about the links between strength of will, DNA, and kabbalistic ritual? A fusion of aggressive metal with contemplative romantic wanderings, Averse Sefira render into melody an introspective art.

How can you slam Cradle of Filth and praise Gorgoroth?

Have you heard Antichrist? -- later Gorgoroth is garbage, but all Cradle of Filth is garbage. Also, I prefer the earlier, better version of CoF called "Iron Maiden." But that's another story.

"Cruelty and the Beast" is garbage?
    Not attacking, just saying.
No, I haven't heard Antichrist so maybe it is good. All I know about Gorgoroth is that if I wanted to hear horrible music played by people in ridiculous costumes, I would listen to Carpathian Forest.
At least they know that they're a joke.

Well, "Cruelty and the Beast" is heavy metal, and not very distinctive musically at that, so yes, in my mind it's garbage. I would rather listen to Iron Maiden as they're the archetype CoF is following.

Antichrist & Pentagram are the two good Gorgoroth releases. I would avoid everything else. However, I'd also avoid Carpathian Forest: the music is derivative and boring and no better than later Gorgoroth, in my view.

I would listen to lots of early Burzum, Immortal and Enslaved.

yes, modern day metal is stupid. But compared to other modern day garbage, its actually not all that bad.

I got over the heavy/thrash metal stage a LONG time ago. Therefore i listen to Black/Death metal.

I prefer listening to early Morbid Angel, Death, Nile, etc.

Then you also have BM, for which i would recommend Nokturnal Mortum.

Ildjarn's good by me. I even like his ambient works.

Of course that review is a bit... familiar

It may not be distinctive, but it is skillfully played and at times quite intricate. I still say it's better than anything I've heard by Gorgoroth, but I will check out the albums.

You missed my point: Carpathian Forest is bad, and they know they are bad, and they are mocking every bad black metal band that has an mcd out.

Although few things are as amusing as watching a daytime Dimmu Borgir concert.

    Krieg:

I've rather mixed feelings on Nokturnal Mortem: on one hand, I love the raw wildness of albums like Lunar Poetry and Mirovezzenrie, on the other it would just be simpler to listen to Bathory's last two albums.

I like the raw, primitive feel in Forest Poetry.
Of course there are other "primitive" bands, like Angel Corpse", but in Ildjarn's Forest Poetry and a few other albums I have it really feels like nature's power.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Immortal!

Emperor before prometheus? They are progressing into something vile (in a good way) - just look at depraved. But anything from Emperor prior 'Prometheus (The discipline of fire and demise)'.. not my cup of tea..

I flew by the 'covetous of neck-agility' bands. Scandinavian trash/death/metalcore is intriguing.

Raised Fist: dedication (anything prior dedication is fucked)

    get this right

    dedication

Yes, Emperor before Prometheus. For that style, I prefer something along the lines of Deicide - technical death metal by the masters.

Right now listening to Bruckner again, but I've got ILDJARN - DET FRYSENDE NORDARIKET in the car (also ordered from evilmusic.com)

I agree with all of those, especially the ones I've heard. Meshuggah is good too, but androids choices are better except mabye catch 33. That is one freaking awesome album. For me, #1 is Hvis Lyset Tar Oss by burzum. The song Det Som engang var is my all time favorite song, any genre. Also check out ulver and darkthrone.

A lot of Meshuggah fans like Vio-Lence and Exhorder as well, it seems.
