I've noticed that when I surf THIS site sometimes I get a pop-up message that says... A new kind of internet advertising is coming...blahblahblah...one that uses popup messages to...blahblahblah...please vist www.messagestomper.com for more details...blahblahblah.

I have yet to visit messagestomper... I refuse because they advertise with the same pop-up message they are supposedly against.

I was wondering if anyone else saw this.

    ---

Next time I see it, I will transcibe the entire message without the blahblahblahs.

    Thanks.

Which prog do you use exactly... and does it stop all these popup messanger ads or just the google ones?

Also, I am using secretmaker to stop popups, but it doesn't catch these "new" types of ads... is there a program that will stop them all?

INFORMATION I JUST GOT FROM NBC

    Messenger Popups
    FTC calls them "extortion"
    I.J. Hudson, Tech Reporter
You expect to run into a few popup ads when you surf. And there is a lot of software to stop them if you don't like popups.

But other ads have been coming through a back door called the Windows Messenger Service (not instant messaging). It's designed for network administrators to notify users of outages, upgrades, printing completion, etc. But a California company found a way to use that back door to "reach" consumers.

The FTC obtained a Temporary Restraining Order against D-Squared Solutions. The FTC said the company was exploiting Windows Messenger Service to "extort" consumers - by sending them ads for software - to stop these kinds of ads. "The sending of the message for no other purpose than to try to charge you to stop sending the message," said Howard Beales of the FTC in a Washington, DC news conference. "I mean, that's what's going on here. I'll beat you and I'll stop beating you when you pay. We call that extortion, and it's not any different in the high tech world," said Beales.

The problem about the ads that come thru Windows Messenger is that you're not really browsing; it's not really a popup. It's going thru a service built into Windows 2000 and Windows XP. While the default setting is "started," or on, consumers don't really need it. But it can be an open pipeline as long as you're hooked to the Internet.

Karen McKechnie filed a complaint with the FTC. She said the messages on her screen became more than an annoyance. "Disabled my computer. It blocked the whole screen and I couldn't use it for anything, not Internet search, downloading or even using Word."

While most of the offending ads offered software to stop the ads, you can turn off Windows Messenger Service yourself. It takes about 6 or 7 clicks. Here's how, according to several security firms.

Windows XP Home Click Start, then Control Panel. Double-click Performance and Maintenance. Double-click Administrative Tools. Double-click Services. Highlight/ right-click on Messenger Choose Properties and in the "Startup type" list choose Disabled. Click Stop, and then click OK.

Windows XP Professional Click Start, click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools Double-click Services Highlight/ right-click on Messenger Choose Properties and in the "Startup type" list choose Disabled. Click Stop, and then click OK.

Windows 2000/NT Click Start, go to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools. Double-click Service. Double-click Messenger. In the "Startup type" list, choose Disabled. Click Stop, and then click OK.

"They can turn this off, and that's one part of the solution," says Beales. "But a firewall protects against a variety of other intrusions as well. This is not the only way, and not the only risk that's out there of people getting into your computer."

We contacted the office of the attorney representing D-Squared Solutions for comment. Our call (at this writing) has not been returned.

Some of the sites advertised in these popups appear to be offline.

You're being hit with the windows messenger service. Right-click my computer, select manage, go to sevices and applications/services. Find messenger on the list. Double-click it, select disable from the drop down list. And you're good. You will most likely also have to click stop. I think disable just stops it from starting next time you start windows. Incidentally, there are a few other services that one might desire to disable. Telnet and terminal services for two.
