Just another (but big) reason to meditate regularly. http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2006/02.02/11-meditate.html
“One way to compensate for a tiny brain is to pretend to be dead” “How did the scarecrow know he didn't have a brain? "God gave men both a penis and a brain, but unfortunately not enough blood supply to run both at the same time.”
I find that statement a little bizarre. Especially since... I don't know... we seem to have larger brains in proportion to our body compared to other animals, and we are significantly smarter than them. Now, if my brain is slightly larger than someone elses brain, then I agree, there probably is no correlation.
It's the relationship between brain-weight and body-weight that matters--in humans it's 1:50, i.e. 3 lb brain to 150 lb body. Don't know what it is for other species, but I'd say considerably less, with the probable exception of dolphins and possibly whales.
There is a correlation between brain size and brain damage however.. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Edit: Damn, tuber beat me to it Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
The complexity and density of neural connections (dendrites) have more to due with intelligence than brain size. A small, densely packed microchip of unimaginable complexity is more efficient than a bulky box made up of a few AND and OR gates.
True, when it says increase brain size, it really means increase brain thickness. It says this a couple times in the article. Maybe it means both.
oh there are some people around here who are VERY thick (sorry couldnt help myselfPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!)
Surely the word 'thick' should actually mean intelligent, since thicker neural connections = more efficient brain?
Thick means dense as in hard to penetrate, which in turn connects with being mentally slow. Just guessing here.. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
When it comes to brain size it doesn't matter if it's slightly larger or smaller then someone elses or even your own. The brain is massive already and we don't utilize it enough.
you are forgetting propagation delay, the time it takes to traverse the gate. if propagation delay is the measure of efficiency then a densely packed complex circuit would be less efficient. propagation delay is important in computers where the operation is controlled by a clock, not sure if it would apply here or not.
The article points out that areas of the brain that tend to thin with age were not thinning or were thicker in those who meditate. I don't see the article making any claims - nor even the OP - that it makes you smarter, but it seems to counteract aging in areas to do with concentration and emotional processing. That sounds good to me.
I think the cro-magnons had a bigger brain than us, homo-sapiens. And they were nowhere near as intelligent as us.
On another note, there was a study somewhere, suggesting a strong inverse correlation between intelligence and sex life.
yoga therapy It is our general observation that most of the people try to find real peace of mind and are always in search of a quality yoga centre. Today, any Tom, Dick and Harry to have started yoga centres - without truly understanding what yoga is all about. We have been emphasizing that yoga is not only about asanas and pranayams - though they are an essential component. So, any centre merely teaching the yoga practice around these two practices is not a yoga centre. We have been observing hundreds of educated and well qualified people being exploited in the name of yoga training at the yoga centres run by run-of-the-mill preachers. We believe we can help the society in a large way, by undertaking such so as to further spread the true light of yoga. Does that mean, a fat person is less intelligent than a skinny person? The ratio could be double than the other....
