Utah is a very conservative Republican State. The Republican Party regularly sends their candidates to both the Governors Mansion and the State House. The Democrats lose to even 3rd Party Candidates. So you might expect the mayor of the capitol city to also be a Republican? Guess again, Salt Lake City has the dubious distinction of having one of the most liberal mayors in the country. Yes the state is one of the most conservative, but Salt Lake City itself is not. It can compete with Berkley any day of the week.

Not just a run of the mill liberal, Rocky Anderson is the very definition of liberalism in every possible way. If there is a liberal cause to be glommed on to, Rocky will be in the forefront. Every half baked liberal theory that comes down the pike Rocky Anderson will take it as gospel and champion it with a religious zeal. Unfortunately he is not satisfied with containing his ideology to his city. He thinks of himself as the mayor of the state, and often injects himself into the affairs of other cities. His activism has never stopped at the cities edge.

The Legacy Parkway is a good example. North of Salt Lake is in desperate need of an alternate to Interstate 15. Many Davis County residence work in Salt Lake and commute to th
e city. I15 has become woefully inadequate. Traffic jams are the norm, but if something unusual happens that closes the freeway, which does happen, there are very few alternatives. Even though Davis County contributes a huge worker and tax base to Salt Lake, Rocky Anderson vigorously opposed the new parkway. Along with his leftist buddies in the Sierra Club and other extreme environmental groups they have all but stopped the project from going forward. What the really galling part of it is that the legacy parkway would connect into I 215 before it ever reaches Salt Lake, which is well out of his jurisdiction. Rocky Anderson as mayor of Salt Lake City should have no say what so ever in it’s construction.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will be conducting their annual convention this Monday in Salt Lake City, and President Bush has been invited to speak. The usual rent-a-mob crowed will be coming out to protest the war in Iraq along with their dirty laundry list of other leftist causes. This year the protestors will be joined by none other than the Mayor of Salt Lake himself Rocky Anderson. Yet again he will be embarrassing the city and the state. I don’t care if the President is a Republican or a Democrat, but when the President of the United States visits your city you should accept him graciously and courteously. Bill Clinton was always greeted with respect when he came here. Yes there were the protestors, but there was never a mayor of a city among them.

Rocky Anderson’s move could be very costly to the city. Undoubtedly, this is going to make other organizations think twice before choosing Salt Lake City for their conventions. Why would anyone want to come to a city were the mayor himself protests their event and their guests?

Will Rocky be acting in his official capacity as the Mayor, or as a private citizen? If any public funds or assets are used during his protest, he should be called to account for this blatant misappropriation of the tax payer’s dollars.

The Deseret News is reporting that Rocky Anderson used his official Email to send out pleas to join the protests.

Some of those contacted also criticized Anderson for using city e-mail to send the protest call. State law states "a municipal officer or employee may not use municipal equipment while engaged in political activity."

If he has used his official Email for political purposes then he has violated the law and should be impeached.

And do you know what your president did to the protestors....

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/8/22/13030/7546

I'd say this is more of a sign to stop people from protesting him.

-One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.

-The police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage.

-The police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main promoter went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I have the permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the permit out of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead and said "get the fuck out of here right now."

This all from a peaceful protest.

Wow and i thought Bush was just a coke snorting college drunk. I guess I was wrong.

At least Bush has never had protestors audited by the IRS like Clinton did.

Instead he used tear gas, and had innocent people who couldn't defend themselves beaten. He had soldiers hold their assault rifles to people's heads/

    you are a fucking idiot

    and thats all...

jesus christ, i cant even write what i'd like to say right now because i'm still contemplating how absolutely inane your post is...

living in salt lake, i fail to see where anderson has posed such a threat, or problem... i've never heard anything on the news supporting any of these claims, and i've never heard it reported where he stands on the decisions made by the president. as far as the legacy highway goes, i dont think it's a matter of leftist folks putting an end to anything. if you've driven through I15 in utah, you'll notice most the traffic jams are caused from either renovation (rebuilding much of it), or car wrecks, which really cant be avoided.

still, i'd say it's not half as bad as any of the traffic in any of the surrounding states.

even if he doesnt support bush, he's the fucking mayor, and doing the mayor's job fine... as a private citizen, he can do whatever the fuck he wants. from the looks of your post, i see you have never ever ever ever been to utah before. salt lake is very far from what i'd call a liberal city.

it was a very poorly composed post, and a very pathetic attempt at making a blind stab at liberalism... i think what happened up at the party up in diamond fork canyon is the real story... i had many friends there...

"Patriotism," the mayor said, "demands that people speak out when we see our government officials acting in such anti-democratic and deceitful ways to the people of our country."

He also said: "I don't understand people simply blindly going along with the sort of deceit and utter cruelty of this administration. It's not just we have the right to speak out, but we have the obligation to speak out when we see misconduct on the part of the government. The most patriotic thing we can do is stand up against the misuse of governmental power."

    GO ROCKY!!

That is an absurd stretch by any measure.
The email went to 10 people, not thousands!
"No political email" measures aim to keep clogging banwidth and misuse of resources for personal and political gain restricted.
10 emails is hardly a notable infarction.
It wasn't political campaining either, because he is not running again.
There is likely a regulation about using email for personal reasons, but should a mayor be impeached for email his wife to tell her he will be late for dinner?
    Ridiculous.

Brutus, the traffic in Salt Lake is a joke!
    Have you ever driven there?
You can get to anywhere in the valley in 25 minutes DURING RUSH HOUR.
They simply don't need another freeway. The cost (finacially and enviromentally) is not justifyable.

Salt Lake can give Berkeley a run for its money??
If you have ever been to either, then you are simply a liar.
I have spent time in both, and any valid comparison is unfathomable!

Salt Lake is liberal compared to the rest of the LDS-owned and operated state, sure, but it's still conservative compared to any other major metroplitan area in the country ESPECIALLY the San Francisco Bay area!

The point of an elected official is to faithfully represent his constituancy.
Not pander to any elected official that is visiting his city.
I think Rocky passed with flying colors!

Less than a week after Rockystock, the Mayor of Salt Lake, Rocky Anderson has yet again embroiled himself in another controversy. He announced that he will grant the same benefits now enjoyed by married couples, to gays and live-in couples. He said he will do this with or without City Council approval, and says he is legally empowered to do it. He has already tried to push through a gay couple registry which is a quasi marriage license.

Last year the voters of Utah overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment which reads "no other domestic union, however denominated, may be recognized as a marriage or given the same or substantially equivalent legal effect"

As long as this amendment stands it should bar Rocky Anderson from granting these benefits. The law is quite clear that no other domestic union can be given equal status and the benefits that legally married couples receive. This should put an end to Rocky’s argument, but I believe he is taking a page out of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s playbook and is prepared to enact this by fiat whether the law allows it or not. Like the liberal mayor of San Francisco, Mayor Rocky will defy the will of the people, the Utah State Constitution, and common decency to force his agenda through. Rocky is an ACLU lawyer, and his loyalties obviously reside in that extreme leftist group rather than the people of Salt Lake City.

When Gavin Newsom flouted the law he should have been put in irons and removed from office, but that did not happen. This president showed other liberal mayors like Rocky Anderson that they too can ignore the law and not face any legal consequences. Rocky believes he is empowered to do this not because the law is on his side, but rather he knows he will not be held legally responsible, just like Gavin Newsom. If corrupt politicians feel they can break the law with impunity and get away with it, ignore voters, and the Constitution, that is exactly what they will do. If Rocky gets away with this, what other edicts does he plan to foist upon the people of Salt Lake?

As mentioned in this forum before, Rocky may have broken the law by using his official email to solicit supporters for Rockystock to protest President Bush when he was in town. Even though Rocky was aware he may be skirting the law, he probably didn’t even think twice about it because he knew no one in Utah has the guts to even investigate him, let alone indict and prosecute. Seeing that he got away with flouting the law in that case it is no wonder he jumped so quickly to push through his illegal plan to grant benefits to domestic partners.

Our very democratic system is at risk, and that is truly a horror to contemplate.

But didn't you just say how liberal Salt Lake is?
    Look at that...
    You DID!!
So, were you full of sh1t then or now?
He sent 10 emails to colleagues to invite them to this protest.
Would it have been illegal if he sent 10 emails to Bush supporters to invite them to this rally?
Would you be calling for his impeachment?
    You are such a hypocrite.
At least try and be honest.
He was sending the emails in the official capacity of his job.
    He did nothing illegal.

As for extending benefits, it does not break the resolution.
He is not trying to define any homosexual partnership as "as a marriage or given the same or substantially equivalent legal effect".
He is simply extending some benefits to city employees and he is WELL within his rights to do so.
