View Full Version : Mayans intellect
shekhar1438 06-19-07, 04:19 AM Hi all,
I want to hear your thoughts on the Mayan's Prophecy. First of all, let me begin by telling you that, myself and my thoughts are more inclined towards science rather than religious and mystical explanations. But, i am open to any thought, as far as it helps me satisfy my desire to find the TRUTH about our existence etc.,
So, my question here, is about Mayan philosophy and their thought!! I've heard a lot about Mayan civilzation but up-until recently, when i have visited Mayan temples and got to see their maginificent work!!! That led to many questions and also changed how I view our ancient civilizations.. Please (if possible) help me understand the following points (or) thoughts which popped up in me when i visited Mayan temples.
1. How did Mayans (who are supposed to have been lived so many years ago) build such an exceptionally, accurate temples and pyramids with almost precice measurements of astronomical data? (they are off by only 33 seconds as of today in their solar calendrical measurements)
2. How did they gain such an immense knowledge? We, today, believe that technology has always increased linearly over time, but seeing Mayan civilization, i feel that statement is not true anymore. What is your say on this?
3. Mayans predicted number of things, including the end of the world, to be Dec 23, 2012. How did they come up with that? How are we, today, able to decipher their predictions and come with a date such as above? Please educate me.
4. We boast of such a great technological advancements today, but have we really progressed anything today, when compared to Mayans intellect?
Please share your thoughts (and also share if you have any other thoughts to add to) and educate me in this area. I appreciate everyone's reply and will promptly reply, if you want me to explain anything more deeply (or) share my expreiences in Mayan areas in central america. Thank you all in advance.

Answer...
1. They received instructions and knowledge from alien colonizers.
2. The structural geometry is mapped to a point in the sky which represents the star system of that particular colonizer. Purpose most probably navigation and dimensional travel.
3. The calenders contribute to the annomalies within the sun cycle.
4. Technology was limited to its purpose and carefully ministered and controlled by the alien caretakers.

1) They got much of their knowledge from inhabitants of other worlds, just as their own mythology tells us...
2) This is a good point, knowledge is supposed to grow linearly...like how you can see the progression in Ancient Greece when they tried to calculate pi and the duration of a year, etc..but the Mayans just "got" it all at once from seemingly nowhere...this indicates that the knowledge came from some other source...
3) The Mayans never say the world will end on that date, rather it simply indicates another new world cycle...just like how 28,000 BCE was a new cycle, 3114 BCE was a new cycle, etc....the actual Golden Age begins in the around May 3, 7138 CE according to the Mayans....this age beginning in 2012 CE is simply a different (better) age....
4) Yeah, we're a lot better than the primitive Mayans, they were nothing more than primitive people compared to us, today's modern people, ofcourse their intellect was greater than ours but that's a different story...our knowledge is greater their intellect is greater....
shaman_ 06-20-07, 10:29 PM 1. They followed path of the sun and the stars. It does not require alien assistance or technology to follow a light across the sky. Many civilisations closely analysed the sun, stars and the weather. Doing so would indicate when to plant crops. If they were a few weeks late the lower crop yield could cause starvation.
2. As above. No great technology was needed.
3. VitalOne is actually correct on one point. They did not predict the end of the world. It is merely a change of cycles. It would probably have been a time of celebration for the Maya.
4. The Maya were fairly smart; they had brains the same size as ours. With this intellect they were still unable to prevent the decline or 'collapse' of their civilization.
Wisdom_Seeker 06-21-07, 12:14 PM The Mayan’s astronomical knowledge is very similar to the Egyptians and others, they appear to have come from the same source, but it’s hard to tell ´cause of the geographical distance.

Note that several of the explanations above involving aliens are essentially religious and mystical rather than scientific. There's zero evidence for them.
My answers:
1. The Mayans were good astronomers and mathematicians, and not stupid. The Egyptians lined their pyramids up pretty well, too. No outside help is required.
2. Your question assumes that the Mayans had "immense knowledge" that is inaccessible to us today. There is zero evidence for that. The knowledge they did have is perfectly well explained in the historical context of the time. Our technology is way ahead of what the Mayans had.
3. The Mayan calendar was limited by the way it was constructed (which is a very interesting story, if you look into it). It was simply incapable of expressing dates beyond a certain point. But there is zero evidence that the Mayans associated the end of their calendar with any special event at all - and certainly not the end of the world. They made no predictions based on the end of their calendar.
4. Did the Mayans have computers, or even electricity? Did they have cars? Did they send a man to the moon? Be serious.
charles brough 06-23-07, 05:28 PM 4. The Maya were fairly smart; they had brains the same size as ours. With this intellect they were still unable to prevent the decline or 'collapse' of their civilization.
Exactly! they did well considering they did not have the fine draft animals people in the Old World had nor the fine grains they had. They did not mine and smelt hard metals and did not invent the wheel. The Aztecs believed they had to sacrifive people to supply enough blood that the sun god would return each morning. Even their temples were no match compared to those of Ancient Greece, Angkor, and the Vatican.
So, they declined. The Greek-Roman civilzation declined; so did the Egyptian, the Persian, the Babylonian, the Hindu, the Easter Island, the etc. etc etc.
When is it our turn, class? Who is thinking about that? "Oh no! Not us; it is always only "the other guy."
charles,

So how does true astronomical knowledge suddenly arise out of nowhere? Wouldn't there be some indication of growth of knowledge, meaning before they had different calculations then arose to the right calculation? Why would they get it all right the first time?

So then how did the Ancient Egyptians calculate the center of the Earth? How did they gain such knowledge?

Who says they got it all right the very first time???? It was progressive - a learning experience for every civilization.
So then how did the Ancient Egyptians calculate the center of the Earth? How did they gain such knowledge?
By learning and refining mathematics.
There's no great mystery in any of this stuff.
Nikelodeon 06-26-07, 04:27 PM The Mayan’s astronomical knowledge is very similar to the Egyptians and others, they appear to have come from the same source.
That source being the stars.

Records of the Mayan civilisation are very sketchy. Of course they didn't develop a sophisticated astronomy and mathematics over night. Nor did they get it all right the first time. We're talking about a civilization that lasted a long time.

What do you mean the Egyptians calculated the centre of the Earth?

Well yeah there records are sketchy but still how did they get all that accurate information (their calendar is more accurate than our modern calendar)?
What do you mean the Egyptians calculated the centre of the Earth?
The Giza Pyramids are at the exact center of Earth's land mass....
Read-Only 06-27-07, 05:53 PM Well yeah there records are sketchy but still how did they get all that accurate information (their calendar is more accurate than our modern calendar)?
And by what absurd piece of 'logic' do you claim their calendar was MORE accurate?!?!
The Giza Pyramids are at the exact center of Earth's land mass....
Gimmie a break!! Who told you THAT?????
Fraggle Rocker 06-27-07, 07:41 PM The Giza Pyramids are at the exact center of Earth's land mass.Pardon me but I did study physics and mathematics at Caltech--which is overkill for this question but it got your attention. How exactly does one calculate the location of the center of a land mass, when that land mass is wrapped around the surface of a sphere and therefore has no boundaries? The best one could do is locate the center of gravity, and that would be well down inside the planet, closer to the center than to the surface.

Their calendar is not more accurate than our modern calendar.

You mean, when you lay out a map of the world on a flat surface, with Africa in the centre, then you draw lines across it at the "centre", they intersect at Egypt. Big deal. If I do the same with a world map centred on Australia, say, I'll get a completely different result.

Because, today, we are so arrogant as to think that we are the only ones with brains. We have labeled them as savages, and indeed their practices are savagery, but they are at war with other tribes. We in modern society, displays such savagery as well in times of war. No difference. It just a matter of taste I suppose. lol.
One thing really odd about this civilization - their religion. If you take a closer look, even before the spanish conquest, with solid archaeological findings, Kukulkan was depicted as being crucified on a cross as carved in stones. He was considered as a god by the Mayans. They also celebrated Dec. 25. Very odd. I think those spanish missionary were even dumbfounded when they saw this. How in the world the Roman Catholic religion is similar to this?
