I only started getting interested in manga last year when my Korean friend would drag me over to the manga section of Borders and point out all that I was missing. While I never did get into the graphic novels [its been a long time since I used to pick up the thin little comics on Phantom and Spiderman from the neighborhood library], I did discover Hayao Miyazaki.

My favorite is Howl's Moving Castle

I love the dramatic prince Howl, the young/oldSophie, the scarecrow and most of all the Castle. For some reason it brought to mind my favorite stories about the Wishing Tree and I enjoyed the movie thoroughly!

    You can see it here

If you like Howl's, I think you'd like both of the Vampire Hunter D movies.
Vampire Hunter D (both of them), Akira and Macross Plus are probably my favorite Anime movies.

Did anyone here know that when Akira came out in 1989, the animators used over 500 different colors in the animation? That's way more colors than the screen resolution of what most all computers could do back then.

Macross Plus is fantastic and IMO the best anime ever produced. Closely following is a fav of mine 5 centimeters per second which is just great. Of course I've never met a female that age that wanted to mount me but eh

Hum I can go on I'm sleepie

Grave of the fire flies. A very depressing and incredibly sad movie about two orphans trying to survive during the fire bombing of Japan. Worse, its based on a true story.

Amazing. In 9 parts on youtube

I know how the anime first seems like its a simple oldie, but believe me underneath it lays a beautiful rich story of princess kidnapped and a world in apocalypse.

Somthing subdued with a good underlying theme.

A classic is that which precedes its own time in richness of detail and story, yet is indeed made some time ago to fall into the classification of "ruins of the past"

No, I'd suggest what I mention above. Akira. I watch Anime for the animation and how graphic/detailed they get just as much for the plot and story.
I like Akira because it's just so intense, graphic, complex and violent. It also doesn't have the standard 'bubbly' type animation that you see members here posting pics of.

If you want something with ridiculously 'how did they do that' crisp graphic animation, try Steamboy. The plot isn't my favorite, but it has the most detailed animation I've ever seen in any Anime movie.
Here's a couple of still shots from it. Pay close attention to all the little nuances and details of the little stuff, like all the detail on the desktop here, even the little insects in the lantern.

And just the little details in this one, including the cracks on the tarmac, DAMN!
