Read it. He was advised not to fly, not told not to. And further reading indicates that he wanted to get to the States where he was going to get the best treatment.

I feel badly for this guy, he was told that he has the most difficult to treat version of a horrible illness while oversees. He is then told to not come back. There should have been a way to safely transport him back to the U.S.

We eradicated TB years ago but now with all the illegal aliens here, it's coming back.

Illegal aliens harbor fatal diseases that American medicine fought and vanquished long ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, and Chagas disease.

TB had largely disappeared from America, thanks to excellent hygiene and powerful modern drugs such as isoniazid and rifampin. TB's swift, deadly return now is lethal for about 60 percent of those infected because of new Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis. Until recently MDR-TB was endemic to Mexico. This Mycobacterium tuberculosis is resistant to at least two major anti-tubercular drugs. Ordinary TB usually is cured in six months with four drugs that cost about $2,000. MDR-TB takes 24 months with many expensive drugs that cost around $250,000 with toxic side effects. Each illegal with MDR-TB coughs and infects 10 to 30 people, who will not show symptoms immediately. Latent disease explodes later.

You know, I am officially changing my original stance. This guy was told not to go oversees and he did anyway. He was told to wear a face mask and did not. He is demonstrating little or no regard for the safety of those around him.

Sandy, you forgot to mention XDR TB (EXtensively Drug Resistant TB). It is resistant to Isoniazid and Rifampicin, as well as 6 second line drugs. That means that you can't achieve WHO's recommended 4 drug combination therapy. Bloody scary.

What's even scarier is that 1/3 of the world's population has TB, but in 90% it remains dormant. If they happen to get immunosuppressed though... BAM. Lung cavitation.

    Rubbish. :bugeye:

TB has always been endemic in the US. It's incidence is low, but it is far from "eradicated". There was a resurgence of TB in the United States during 1985-1992, but the annual TB rate has decreased steadily since then. In 2006, a total of 13,767 TB cases (4.6 per 100,000 population) were reported in the United States. Among U.S.-born persons in 2006, the rate was 2.3 per 100,000 population (5,924 or 43.3% of all cases with known origin of birth). (Source: CDC)

So, it would seem that your precious white US-born "real Americans" constituted half of all the TB cases last year.

They should have took his passport, all such cases should require it.

A border inspector disregarded a computer warning to stop him and use protective gear.

The inspector ran Speaker's passport through a computer, and a warning — including instructions to hold the traveler, don a protective mask in dealing with him, and telephone health authorities — popped up, officials said. About a minute later, Speaker was instead cleared to continue on his journey, according to officials familiar with the records.

I that case the inspector should be sacked.

I have worries about the Uk with (refugees) getting into our country via diverse illegal methods, our government is just playing Nero, we are and island, it should be easy to control this influx, at the very least these (refugees) should have a medical.

Yes, I realize that like most intolerant racist bigots you selectively rely on mainstream news stories for your data. But if you consulted the CDC (the country’s foremost epidemiology authority) you would know that there are nearly as many white caucasian home-grown Americans spreading TB amongst themselves as there are “illegal aliens” spreading TB. The majority of these “real Americans” are doing so without any help or input from “illegal aliens”. So to specifically point out and highlight illegal aliens with respect to this issue is simply part of your bigoted and racist agenda, as per usual. But I’m sure you don’t want facts to get in the way of your intolerance.

And whilst you are correct that a percentage of TB cases in the US are due to foreigners from Mexico and Asia, I will reiterate:

TB cases have been falling steadily over the past decade.

This important fact serves to highlight your alarmist exclamations about illegal aliens spreading TB for what they are – yet another grubby attempt to demonize people that don’t conform to your religious zelotry.

I agree with Hercules. In addition, due to the overall tone of the OP and the rather obvious agenda behind it, I fail to see why this thread should be in the Biology&Genetics section.

The B&G thread is about genomics, bioengineering, and infectious diseases.
TB is highly infectious. I cited the source of the increase of this disease in my country. Proving it may bother some who are in denial. But the facts remain.

The guy that inconsiderately exposed hundreds of innocent people to the deadly disease is a POS just like whoever he got it from. Once someone suspects they have a highly contagious/non-treatable/deadly disease, they have the obligation to quarrantine themselves.

You. OP is not about epidemiology of infectious diseaeses within the light of global travel, but about how foreigners infect your allegedly clean country.
The first might just fit into this subforum, the latter clearly isn't.
In addition Hercules clearly demonstrated that particularly TB is endemic in the US, so this is a particularly bad example.

One could, for example instead discuss how Christian missionaries and travellers transferred influenza and other diseases to isolated populations that had no prior exposure to these disesases and were subsequently (almost) eradicated? Or as already partially covered in some old SARS thread how the security measures are to inhibit epidemics? A thread blaming some guy, however, is clearly not within the scope of B&G

No. My OP was about TB. Not about how most Americans get it.

Really? This is an informative post about tuberculosis? This is related to the study of it's epidemiology?

No, it's not. It's about an American man who went to the doctor, was awaiting test results and left the country for his wedding and honeymoon, and was contacted days later with the information that he had TB. He didn't know that before he left.

He also figured that since he would have been put on no fly lists, that they wouldn't let him on the plane home. They did anyway. Maybe Italians don't like the Czechs, because they let him board a flight to Prague. Who knows.

There is also this, from the NY Times article again.

You did read the entire article, right Sandy?
