It seems that half the "force" of determinism comes from the ego. The other half is our choice to be determined. Man is animal, and his attempt at civilization has many disadvantages as well as advantages. The ego makes us want to connect with our primal natures and with humanity while our intellects want us to separate and be individuals, arising in a division to ourselves. We become afraid to disconnect because then we know that we would no longer claim to be innocent in our actions as we would be determining them.
