I've been playing guitar for a while now and am keen on recording some tracks. I'm in a band, but would prefer to create something on my own.

I'm wanting to record myself playing chords, bass and lead guitar separately and then mix them all together.

Can anyone recommend a piece of computer software that would do this?

When I'm rich and famous I'll name a song after you

Why not just get a 4 track? We did some great stuff with an old one and didn't need the computer. (When Pat "The Dude" checked in on vocals things went kind of downhill in a funny way, imagine Axl Rose doing "Louie, Louie", but it was pretty easy.)

    "Anal beads, anal beads,
    Everybody needs anal beads,
If they're glass and they break then your anus bleeds,
    Oh! Those anal beads!"

    EVERYBODY! ALL TOGETHER NOW!!!

You can probably do all that with a program called Audacity. It's free, by the way.

If you have lots of money and equipment to spend or dish out, then use some VST synthesis software or something like that. I don't know how to use it yet, but I'm hoping someday I will.

Currently I am doing amateurish things with a MIDI softsynth called Midig 2.03 and soundfonts (both of which are free). It gives pretty good sound if you plan on doing basic drum beats and rhythyms, and has a lot of potential depending on which MIDI editor you use; I use the free version of AnvilStudio.

there is a program called "live" which is excellent. It has all the various tools you need to make music with loops, keyboard sounds, and recording. It is also very easy to use compared to programs with more specific features in each area.
Also garage band is ok, but it has way fewer features than live, and you will grow out of it quickly, it is easy to use but it is extremely difficult to do detailed work with it.
Downside - it costs three hundred dollars.

Did some research into a four track, thanks for that Oxygen. I've got one ordered from e-bay.

I've also downloaded Audacity and am currently playing around with that.

    Thanks for the help guys.

    Hi Varda,

Nope. It`s pretty user friendly once you know your way around. Best part is it`s very forgiving! Very stable and flexible. I`ve been using it for 14 years. Never lost a note!

protools is the only program to have if you are working on stuff and have to go to different studios, get tracks from other people, etc.
But all the plugins for protools are expensive - the synth plugins, etc, are expensive.
Plus you need a decent computer to run it.
If it is only for recording and isn't being used to do a lot of looping and programming, protools is good, but it isn't good as a one-shot do-it-all machine.
It depends on what a person needs.

And yes, it takes more effort to learn because there are more functions than some programs. This allows you to do more detailed work, if you need to go there.

    EDIT-
I don't recommend it to someone who just wants a lot of tools to make music, and isn't going to be an engineer or producer - that having been said, it is called PROtools for a reason.

    Protools. Excellent.

I have old version. REALLY excellent!

Making music sucks. People shouldn't do it. But we do it anyways, don't we!?!?

If money is a problem, theres nothing wrong with an analogue 4 track machine either, if youre just having fun. Some big names have gone back to recording on analogue tape. I still have an old 2 inch 24 track machine which is yet to gather dust. And its a beautifull thing to behold!

    Smell that fresh tape.
Imagine what it will hold after you are done recording.
    Yum Yum!

Yeah baby! My fantasy has always been to discover a treasure trove of long forgotten tapes, maybe in a basement or an attic somewhere in a building that I buy. Out of curiosity I thread it onto my 24 track and I hear ... a Fender Stratocaster talking, there’s a thundering drum track, and there’s a bass line that’s got a life of its own ... can you tell me what I am thinking?

Yes, that's my fantasy too! Or books, or photos! I've had this idea ever since I can remember.

We better start burying things -- because someone has got to put them there, if someone else is going to find them.

Damn! Can you see the dusty basement in that derelict old bulilding? Whats that in the corner? This old museum building must have been sealed up for 150 years! Whats in this chest? It`s a strange kind of writing ... ancient codex, falling apart at the touch. What does it say ... Lennon is god?
