I understand what gives a material its magnetic properties but why is this only possible for iron, cobalt and nickel, why is it not possible for any other elements and what is the link between these all being grouped together on the periodic table?

What is your understanding of why materials are magnetic?

This actually got me thinking (perhaps it is just too much beer) -- isn't it such that all materials become magnetic under a given temperature, is there experimental evidence for this ? From theoretical grounds I would suspect that it is (simply look at something like the Ising model which clearly shows that when the lattice spins are aligned properly, you have magnetic properties). Any experimental evidence here ?
