Thought I'd start a thread on this.

Here is some open source software for Mac OS X.

I also recommend Cache Out X, it really cleans up the junk and speeds up your computer.

Firstly samcdkey you must find me a girlfriend, I am going mad and soon my virginity will destroy me utterly.

    Secondly about OS X...

OS X is just like Vista, it's junk... why do I say this? Because it's incomplete....

When Apple merged their computers with Intel chips they designed a program to translate OS X commands into something the processors understood, thus the result was an Emulation-like application called Rosetta. In it's basic sense this pretends to be a Power PC chipset, then it allows OS X to run and operate normally. However what is real is this.. OS X no longer runs on it's own computer system, it cannot...

OS X does very little, infact it offers even less... the computer systems of today Apple sells are at best useful for word processing and such, they cannot do much else... indeed there is no freeware, no software that you can easily find... it's a nightmare... OS X, Vista, these are trash compared to Beryl on Linux or the like...

I'm not an engineer or a computer programmer or even knowledgeable enough to know what the hell you are talking about; all I want is a machine that works. I've used Mac for almost 3 years now, and boy, does it work! Not a single time has it crashed, boomed or banged.

    That's enough for me.

Um, what about photoshop? Video editing? Sound Engineering? All of which are done on macs. Why? Because macs kick ass. At college level sound engineering and such, they only use macs. Why? Because they are way better. Linux is cool, if by functionality you mean running enlightenment and BitchX.

Thanks a bunch, Sam. I'm planning on (maybe) buying a Mac within the next month, so this is a helpful thread. I look forward to more posts!

Jebus, would you give that up?

Rosetta is a tool that OSX uses to run *applications* built for PowerPC on Intel x86 hardware. It is surprisingly fast, to be honest. The method used is a heck of alot better than older emulation systems, which gave you 50% of native speed at best. Rosetta reportedly returns close to 80% of native speed.

OS X itself does *not* run under rosetta. It is compiled, and runs, natively on Intel x86 chips.

Head over to ARS technica's Macintosh Achaia for some great (and mostly level-headed) discussion about Mac Stuff:

Some useful apps for the geek (shareware)

Little Snitch tells you when a program tries to send info to the internet so you can see what's going on in the background! ($24.95 too much imo)

    CleanApp 2.2.6
Version 2.0 of CleanApp uninstaller program now offers a revolutionary new journaling-tool, that makes it possible to track and remove all associated files of programs, without any exceptions. This makes CleanApp the best solution to completely remove applications from your Mac OS X, or to archive it for later use. ($10) Useful for those who like to try out new programs and then delete them

ooo, cleanapp looks cool. Usually uninstalling not a big deal, but some badly behaved apps toss crap all over the system.

zone alarm, if configured right, will tell you when a program tries to access either the trusted zone or the internet, and it's free.
