19 Monkeypox Cases Detected in 3 Midwest States Over Weekend (NY Times; reg. required)

Monkeypox, a viral disease related to smallpox but less infectious and deadly, has been detected for the first time in the Western Hemisphere. Three Midwestern states, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana, reported at least 19 monkeypox cases over the weekend, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Wisconsin reported the vast majority, 17, with Illinois and Indiana reporting one each. The patients ranged in age from 4 to 48 years, and all had had contact with direct or close contact with ill prairie dogs, which have become a common household pet. Several patients work for veterinarians or pet stores that handled the animals. No patients have died, although four have been hospitalized, C.D.C. officials said.

Wisconsin health officials said patients there typically fell ill with signs and symptoms like fever, headaches, nonproductive cough, swollen lymph nodes, chills and drenching sweats. From 1 to 10 days later, the patients developed a rash consisting of blister-like pimples that filled with pus and broke open, finally producing a crust. The rash occurred over the head, trunk and arms and legs, often appearing in different stages or crops.

Monkey pox?

Quite frankly, I'd never heard of it before.

In the 20 years since WHO documented that small pox has been eradicated, doctors and health departments no longer vaccinate children or adults to prevent small pox. Indeed, the WHO planned to destroy the remaining small pox viruses that have been kept by the CDC in the US and in Novosibirsk in Russia (ASA 94-6 ). Small pox vaccinations also protected against monkey pox (normally transmitted from monkeys to humans) and an unanticipated result has been an increase in monkey pox in humans. Not only is monkey pox increasing, but the number of human-to-human transmissions are also increasing. There have been over 170 new cases of monkey pox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) since March 1997. While some cases may be chicken pox, there is enough concern that WHO is sending an investigating team in to the Congo.

Well there is a Chicken Pox so I don't see why there can't be a monkey pox. There is also a Small Pox, but what about Human Pox?? Not very possible I don't think.

the animals all make sense but i think that in order for there to be a small pox there should have been a large pox.. or atleast a Pox. something to compare it to....

There was... the black death was called the pox, presumably it was the BIG pox.
