Do you ever have those moments where you encounter something, and wonder if there is a previously invented term that describes it? Perhaps it's something where you've observed a pattern. Maybe it's a characterstic of something, and wonder if it's common enough to have been given its own definition. Maybe its a term you've heard in the past, but forgotton it. Maybe you're creative, and thought of one that would be perfect.

At any rate, my original intent was to create a new thread asking my own question, but after thinking about it, I thought it would be more interesting to start a whole thread devoted to anyone looking for a term for something. I guess the best format would be to post a description of the screnario/pattern/characteristic/whatever, and other people could take a swing at it if they know the answer (or wanted to invent one LOL).

....at any rate, I guess I'll start.
I'm looking for a term for situations where some sort of popular fiction (usually science fiction) has become stereotyped into the way the real thing is understood.

    a couple of examples
    - Radiation. There was a time years ago where science fiction generated a belief where radiation caused things to suddenly mutate into monsters (IE - giant tarantulas/ants, bizarre monsters, disfigured creatures). There was another meme that demonized all radiation as harmful/cancerous.
    - Genetics/DNA. There is a current meme that 'genetics' can mutate things, and give them superhuman abilities
    - schizophrenia. The meme is that people who suffer from this illness typically "murder people", or that one of the central aspects of this illness is the compulsion for murder.

Is there a term for this (excluding "myth")?

What's the term for a man who greases up his long, hard cock with axle grease and begins to stroke it faster and faster until it spits?

I dunno, but it sounds very blue collar - and possibly limited to rural porcine men named 'Bubba'

Looking for a few terms for facts found on the internet.

If information from a single source on the internet is considered questionable, then the information is made quazi-factual if a bunch of different websites say the same thing.

First-- what is a term for researching to see if a bunch of websites say the same thing.
Second--what is a term for a fact that is backed up by a bunch of websites (composite fact? I dunno).
Third-- a term for information where none of the websites are 100% accurate, but fact is implicit because they are all "close enough".

BTW-- I don't intend to debate on whether or not this is an effective type of research . I'm only interested in the single term that refers to it (if available.......or if you can think of a new one).
