The Titanic is disintegrating. Fast. The combination of damage caused by rust and sea life, as well as an unapproved salvage operation and occasional adventure tours for very rich tourists are accelerating the decay of what is arguably the world's most famous underwater attraction, report ABC News and Reuters

Would you propose some way to save it? It can never really be saved...but it will obviously never be forgotten. All it is is material. The memory is what endures, and what is important.

We have pictures. And the ship was bound to decay. No one can scuba dive there...so they can't see it in person. A video feed is all we could really get. And why don't they just watch the countless hours of footage we already have. The emphasis should not be material.

Memories don't last forever either, DarkEyedBeauty; time is an implacable and lethal attrition. I will admit that it's fairly pleasing to cling to those memories, though.

As I understand it, they cannot raise anything as its a "grave site", don't know the technicalities of that one.

Rubbish. It's a pile of rotting metal and wood at the bottom of the ocean. The memories of the families of those that died is important, and in anycase none of it matters to us really, does it?
It's at the bottom of the ocean, we can't get at it, and even if we could why? so we can stick some old crap in some museum somewhere?

Get over it.

I think this introduction to the 'Eye of the World' best sums it up:

"The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. "

i've only seen it in photographs and video. is it such a bad thing that future generations will also see it that way? not many people actually go and see the thing in person anyway.

Sad.....

I feel sorry that there has been no possible way to build a structure to be placed underwater and sustain very high pressure (Titanic's located very deep in Atlantic, right?). If only it were possble, scientists and co. should build a very powerful glass dome to stop 'unauthorized visitors' from coming to Titanic and destroyit slowly........ Oh, and this project should be done unknowningly to any environment maniac, because some ocean life might be removed from the site...
Okay, this way would be INEFFECTIVE against rust, so there has to be an anti-rust technology developed for it.

I think some people here underestimate the significance of Titanic. It is probably the single most famous shipwreck in history. If its remains were put in a museum, plenty of people would come to look. The story is a fascinating and tragic one. If you weren't around in 1912, you probably can't begin to imagine what a huge story the sinking of the Titanic was, or what an impact it had on confidence in modern technology.

I'm not advocating one action or another here. I'm just saying: don't underestimate the significance of this particular shipwreck.

So,.....whats your point Bonzai?
Its because of that fucking Titanic that my man Leanardo Decaprio
died.
I think they should salvage whats left of that boat and recycle it into something useful like bathroom urinals.:D

P.S.
I have found things more significant while flossing my teeth!

James R :
You're right, it's a significant part of our History. It shows how humans can be proud of their work... However, it's in a deep ocean and it will disappear soon or later, whatever we will do. Then, the scientists/historians should take as many things as they can before the (real) end of the Titanic.

James, 100s of people die in the ocean worldwide every year. Most are poor fisherman off the coast of some forgotten 3rd world country. No one cries over their loss (except for their families and loved ones). Are their lives not as important as those who dided on the Titanic? Why place such intrinsic value on the Titanic? We arbitrarily place such a value on the Titanic, by assuming that people would go and see some rotting remains of a large ship (which sank over 9 decades ago) in some museum. Why? I won't go because I'm told that this wreck is more important than any other wreck, or that the lives of the privilaged plutocrats on board are in any way more important than any other poor old schmuck fisherman that dies at sea.

It wasn't real you know, it was only pretend, just like Snow White and her 7 Perverts, or Indiana Jones and the Temple of TechnoEffects :) ;)

Titanic will never be raised, the costs outweigh the benefits AND it would disintegrate into dust as soon as they touched it anyway.

Yeah, I can see how E. Wood could be irritating slightly...but nothing compared to that bloody Kate Winslet.

funny, i used to think that way. um still kind of do, but i understand why people loved it (in general--thats why it won awards) because of the historical significance.

You're right, it's all materialistic but if you think about it, without knowledge of historical facts or events, we wouldn't know about the first civilization of mesopotamia, greek civilization, blah blah ...you get it. and the fact that one schmuck vs those who died on the titanic is not any different is true though in tragedy everyone is entitled to know what happened even if it's your great greatx50 grand child.

you know thats a good idea, replicating a ship like titanic in a museum, maybe in a smaller scale. i would guess that they are doing that now or it does exist.

yes, you have a point there, the Titanic however is beyond salvage. A replica would be a fairly good idea I suppose.

I certainly didn't say they aren't.

Why place such intrinsic value on the Titanic?

Because it is, among other things, an exemplary cautionary tale of human hubris.

I won't go because I'm told that this wreck is more important than any other wreck, or that the lives of the privilaged plutocrats on board are in any way more important than any other poor old schmuck fisherman that dies at sea.

Actually, most of the people who died on Titanic were Steerage Class passengers with very little money. The higher up in the ship your cabin was, the more chance you had of surviving, statistically.
